Basal temperature and cervical discharge when planning pregnancy

Many changes occur in the body. The speed of some is extremely low. Others repeat regularly very quickly. These processes include the menstrual cycle. A clear confirmation of its constant variability is the basal temperature after ovulation and before its onset. It is produced by internal organs. To measure it, it is necessary to exclude the heat generated by the muscles during contraction.

Rules for conducting thermometry:

  • Use one thermometer for all measurements.
  • Do not change the location when repeating thermometry.
  • Record your basal temperature after sleep (4-6 hours).
  • Record readings without delay.
  • Do not consume alcohol or hormonal drugs, including contraceptives, during the entire period of monitoring basal temperature.
  • The thermometer should be accessible without getting out of bed.

If these recommendations are ignored, the result of the thermometry performed cannot be used for diagnostic purposes.

Features of curve change

The basal temperature in the vagina in the first half of menstruation, before ovulation, does not change, usually does not exceed 36.40C - 36.80C. This stage is called follicular, its duration depends on the woman’s health. After the release of the egg, the temperature curve rises to 37 0C-37.20C. From the moment of ovulation until the start of a new monthly cycle, the luteal phase lasts, the duration of which is 12-14 days.

Basal temperature measurement

If the basal temperature in the luteal phase first rose and then decreased by the end of 2 weeks, this means that the menstrual cycle ends without results. Conception can be assumed if the slight fever does not decrease by the end of the second week and remains within 37.20C.

Measurement rules

Basal temperature can be determined using a regular mercury thermometer, usually rectally (in the rectum). Measurement by oral or vaginal method is allowed. It is recommended to take measurements even during menstrual flow.

In order to evaluate the data obtained, the results should be recorded, as well as a graph should be drawn up, according to which, after the temperature line rises, you can understand that ovulation has occurred. Graphically, only two phases can be displayed - before (estrogen dominates) and after (progesterone dominates) ovulation. It is advisable to use one thermometer.

The measurement time is 5-7 minutes. It is important to reset the mercury thermometer in the evening to avoid unnecessary movements in the morning.

Signs of pregnancy

Based on changes in the temperature graph, one can conclude whether conception has occurred. The onset of pregnancy is indicated by a basal temperature of 37 0C. An increase in the graph curve is caused by the production of progesterone, which the body actively produces after conception.

Progesterone is produced after ovulation, preparing a woman for impending conception. If the egg is not fertilized, progesterone production stops. If conception occurs, progesterone is actively released, creating conditions for the attachment of a fertilized egg to the wall of the uterus, the basal temperature is maintained at 37.1 ± 0.1 0C.

Implantation retraction, reflected on the graph, indirectly confirms the successful conception. Basal temperature after conception drops to an average of 36.7 0C.

Implantation retraction occurs 7-10 days after ovulation. A sharp drop in the graph by 0.3-0.4 0C occurs, presumably, as a result of a sharp increase in the level of estrogen hormones, which upsets the balance of estrogen and progesterone.

Restoring the balance of hormones leads to an increase in the curve on the graph. This position lasts for 16 weeks. After this period, progesterone production stops.

What to pay attention to

Having decided to regularly measure basal temperature, a woman should take into account many small but important nuances:

  • the same thermometer should be used throughout the entire observation period;
  • temperature must be measured in one way;
  • ideal if measurements begin on the first day of menstruation;
  • if relocations, business trips, vacations are expected, the measurements will not be truly objective;
  • any disease disrupts basal temperature;
  • significant doses of medications can affect basal temperature;
  • It is strictly not recommended to drink alcohol during the observation period.

Features of graph interpretation

Based on the temperature chart, you can judge how well the pregnancy is progressing. If after conception the basal temperature drops below 37.20C, this may mean that the fetus is not developing, this is observed with a frozen pregnancy.

A decrease in the curve on the graph indicates hormonal instability, and if you notice this sign in yourself, you should definitely consult a doctor. An increased basal temperature does not always serve as an accurate criterion; a change in the schedule can be caused by:

  • inflammatory disease of the female genital organs;
  • viral infection, cold;
  • drinking alcohol the night before;
  • too active sexual intercourse the previous night;
  • incorrect measurement - after morning exercises, shower.

Pregnancy can be assumed if there is a sharp decrease in the temperature curve on the graph after ovulation. This change is called implantation retraction, and it is not always noted during pregnancy.

This feature of the basal temperature chart is observed on average in 25% of women who become pregnant. At the same time, in 10% of women, basal temperature may decrease temporarily even in the absence of pregnancy.

Influencing factors

What reason can lead to temperature fluctuations? Changes occur in a woman’s body under the influence of various factors, including external factors. Basal temperature can change after nervous strain, as well as any physical conditions, for example, intestinal disorders, sexual intercourse, lack of sleep, use of a heating pad, etc. Temperature fluctuations are affected by alcohol intake. That is why, under the chart opposite the corresponding day, it is necessary to additionally note all minor factors that influence the distortion of the results.

If the readings on the thermometer are between the numbers, then you should select the lowest value.

      Hello, Alina! The likelihood of becoming pregnant is especially high if, during the second sexual intercourse, ejaculation occurs in the corresponding reproductive organs. It is also important that your egg is fertilized during ovulation, when it travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus.

    Hello, on what day after ovulation should you measure your BBT? PA was at ovulation, the next day in the morning I measured BT 36.6, does this mean that conception did not occur?

      Hello Anisat! The process of conception takes time, start measuring BT regularly from the beginning of the cycle and at the same time (making notes in your diary). If the temperature rises by an average of 0.4 degrees during ovulation and after it (several days), then this is a sign of pregnancy.

    Good morning. Please tell me, ovulation was on December 16th. I didn’t measure my BT for a couple of days. Since Tuesday I have been taking Duphaston 10 mg twice a day. Today is the 19th, BT 36.9—is it because of the pills or is there a chance that it’s pregnancy?

    Answer

      Daria:

      12/19/2018 at 20:29

      Good evening, Tatyana! It is too early to assume that if the temperature rises above 37 and there are accompanying symptoms (for example, slight bleeding), then there is a high probability that conception has occurred. You haven’t measured your BT for a couple of days, the data is no longer accurate, try to measure it regularly. But Duphaston does not affect basal temperature in any way. Good luck and good health to you!
