Britax Romer Advansafix

In first place we will put 4 models at once, between which, of course, there are design differences, but, in our opinion, not so significant as to fill half the rating with them: Britax Romer Advansafix IV R, Britax Romer Advansafix IV M, Britax Romer Advansafix i -Size and Advansafix M i-Size. In essence, these are modifications of the same model, with the same body, dimensions, angles of inclination and fastenings. The differences are in additional options, discussed in more detail in other reviews. Britax Romer Advansafix IV R has been independently crash tested by ADAC and received a final rating of "gut". Before it, in group 1-2-3 there were no seats that fastened the child with five-point internal belts of this level of safety. Previously, all 1-2-3 seats rated equally highly by ADAC were models with a safety table, and for 1-2-3 seats with five-point harnesses, the maximum rating was “befriedigend” (“satisfactory, not bad”). We will put the Cybex Pallas S-Fix group 1-2-3 car seat in second place in our rating, although, according to the results of independent ADAC crash tests, its safety rating is higher than that of Britax Romer Advansafix IV R. Why is this?
Chairs of this type, with a safety table, are less popular with parents, although they occupy all the top lines of the tables with crash test results in group 1-2-3. Formally, they can be used from the age of 9 months, but in real life, many parents have problems using chairs of this type when the child is 9-12 months old, especially if he is small. The baby's hands often end up not above the safety table, as in advertising photographs, but on the sides, which often leads to discomfort, whims and difficulties in getting used to this type of chair. On the other hand, the older and taller the child becomes, the more comfortable this type of chair is for him. We would recommend such models if the child is about 15 months old at the time of purchase. Typically, models 1-2-3 with a table do not have additional tilt adjustment and pronounced “sleeping” positions - these are large chairs, they really last up to 11-12 years, if used correctly, but for long journeys with small children this is not an option the best. Cybex Pallas S-Fix can be called a pleasant exception here! The spacious seat is installed on a fairly high base - a “stand”. The child has an excellent view during the trip, but, most importantly, adjusting the position of the seat relative to the base gives us the “rest” position that is so desirable for parents of children. Plus - there is an additional depth adjustment of the headrest - it also slightly improves the child’s sleep quality during the trip. Pallas S-fix is attached to the car's seat belt, through the safety table, and the base of the seat is fastened with connectors to the car's ISOFIX brackets.

In general, if you like chairs with a safety table and you have a fairly large child over 15 months, the Cybex Pallas S-Fix is one of the best options. The main disadvantage, in our opinion, applies to all chairs with a table - this is the risk of improper use of the chair. Surprisingly, many mothers and fathers, having spent a lot of time studying the results of crash tests, memorizing all the ratings down to the tenth of a point and choosing the safest, in their opinion, seat, subsequently use it not as intended by the developers, but in the way whatever seems more convenient to them. For example, they refuse to use the table until the child reaches the required height of 100 cm, considering the safety table to be a kind of optional option.

Joie Bold Isofix

This is perhaps the most controversial assessment of the place of a child seat in this rating. We will put Joie Bold in third place, among the top 10 chairs of the 1-2-3 group with a “sleep” position, precisely at the end of 2020, the beginning of 2021, taking into account the current economic situation. Now this model is the leader in terms of price/quality ratio, which most often determines the final choice of parents. At the same time, even in the line of the same manufacturer, there are nominally much safer 1-2-3 models: Joie Traver Shield, Joie Transcend, Joie Trillo Shield - with “good” ratings in ADAC crash tests. But, this rating is not just 1-2-3 seats for safety, according to ADAC crash tests, but the top 10 seats with a position for resting and sleeping. That is, we try to evaluate the comfort of a child’s long stay in a chair, starting from the youngest permissible age. And by this criterion, Joie Bold clearly looks better than its “comrades”. To install the seat, a combined type of fastening is used - to the ISOFIX brackets in the car seat, plus the Top Tether anchor belt, plus additional fixation with the car's seat belt. You can use the seat's internal five-point harnesses up to a child's weight of 25 kg, rather than the usual 18 kg for seats in this category. The tilt adjustment allows you to set a comfortable “resting” position - the child’s head will not fall forward during sleep when the car brakes. The quality of materials and workmanship is at the level of much more expensive brands. The chair grows with the child - when the headrest is raised to the highest position, the “shoulders” of the chair move wider.

Chicco Youniverse Fix is a car seat that looks similar to the leader in our rating - Britax Romer Advansafix, but is much more affordable. It is also attached to the car's ISOFIX brackets and TopTether anchor straps, plus the car's seat belt. The ADAC crash test rating is "befriedigend" ("satisfactory, not bad") - for seats 1-2-3 with internal belts - a decent result. Deep seat, decent angle of the chair in the “rest” position. The upholstery is the usual smooth synthetic fabric for Chicco chairs - practical, but I would like something more “tactilely pleasant”. Prices for this model vary greatly, but in general it is a good price/safety/quality ratio from a well-known global brand. The decisive factor in favor of choosing this model on a store shelf is often the greater seat depth compared to analogues. And the disadvantages that parents sometimes pay attention to during operation are cheap upholstery fabric and thin protective foam inserts in the sides, which are easy to break when carelessly removing the cover for washing.

Maxi-Cosi Titan Pro

One of the most child-friendly models in the rating, with the highest quality and most pleasant upholstery, with excellent ergonomics, well known to all lovers of chairs from this brand from the Netherlands. Nevertheless, Maxi-Cosi Titan Pro has not yet become particularly popular in our market, and the main reason for this is, of course, the price. Yes, the upholstery here is even nicer than in Britax-Romer or Cybex, the ISOFIX mount in the car is intuitive and simple, but the ADAC rating is quite modest, considering the price - “befriedigend” (“satisfactory, not bad”), with a score for safety "3.0". For comparison, Britax Romer Advansafix IV R has “2.3” (just in case, this is a German scale, where 3 points is much worse than 2). However, if your budget allows, we highly recommend this model. The child will be more comfortable in it than in most other 1-2-3 models, plus the seat does not look alien in the interiors of modern cars, thanks to its modern design and high-quality materials. For many parents this is also a very significant point. The chair leaves a pleasant impression of quality and good quality when installed in a car and tried on with children; “live” you can see that it differs from budget models.

Cybex Pallas 2 Fix

This model is the predecessor of the Cybex Pallas S-Fix chair, which takes second place in our rating. Almost the same pros and cons, at a slightly lower price. Since our rating is purely practical, and among the seats rated “good” in the ADAC crash tests there are very few 1-2-3 seats with a “rest” position, we will give the Pallas 2 Fix a separate place in the top. If your budget allows, it is better to purchase Pallas S-fix. The S-Fix table, with a more elegant shape, is a little less restrictive for a small child, the upholstery materials are a little better, the fastening process is a little more convenient, but the main advantages: safety, size, “resting” position, visibility for the child are the same. Britax Romer Evolva 1-2-3 SL SICT

This chair, in theory, should not be in this rating - the “sleep” position, in the usual sense, when you can recline the chair back after the child has fallen asleep, the Evolva 1-2-3 SL SICT does not! But, surprisingly, the design of the chair is so successful that when installed in real cars, it often turns out to be more convenient for long journeys than many 1-2-3 chairs with multi-stage tilt adjustment. The seat can be attached to car seats with or without the ISOFIX system, using only the car's seat belt. In the chairs of the Evolva line, a comfortable seat for the child is ensured by installing a chair with an additional tilt back due to the folding support in the car seat and an optimally shaped headrest. The headrest not only protects the child's head, but also comfortably holds it while sleeping on the road. Inglesina Newton, like Kiwy Alia, has not yet passed ADAC crash tests, however, the Inglesina brand has long been known for high-quality and safe child seats. The upholstery fabrics are pleasant, cotton-like, and there are many ventilation holes in the body of the chair. The “sleeping” position is more pronounced than in many other chairs, however, the child’s legs are very raised upward, which is why many parents, when the child grows up a little, stop using this adjustment.

Espiro Beta ISOFIX

We included this new chair from the Polish brand Espiro in the rating, one might say “in advance”. The fact is that the choice of modern 1-2-3 seats with a “relaxation” position and ISOFIX mount is not at all as wide as it might seem. And there are even fewer seats with acceptable results in independent crash tests, and almost all of them are not cheap. Espiro Beta is the most budget model in this rating, which can offer the child’s parents a very comfortable seat with decent tilt adjustment, an ISOFIX + Top Tether mount with convenient installation in the car, pleasant fabric covers, and enhanced protection against side impacts. The seat is quite compact, on a not too bulky base, making it suitable for small cars with limited legroom for passengers. The chair complies with the ECE R44/04 standard; in addition, according to information from the manufacturer, it has passed voluntary independent tests in the specialized laboratory CSI (Italy). Since the model went on sale recently, there are no parent reviews on it yet. However, the first experiments with fitting and installation in various cars with ISOFIX, as well as fitting with children of different heights and weights, inspire cautious optimism about the prospects of this model in our difficult economic situation. Structurally, Espiro Beta is a good budget analogue of more expensive chairs from more well-known and popular brands.
