Prospan syrup: release form, composition
When symptoms of bronchitis appear in infants, doctors try to prescribe herbal children’s cough syrups rather than artificial ones. In pharmacies you can find bottles of Prospan with a capacity of 100 or 200 ml.
The main active ingredient is an extract obtained by processing ivy leaves.
The drug also contains excipients that give the medicine color, smell, taste and shape:
- purified water;
- potassium sorbate;
- sorbitol in liquid form;
- lemon acid;
- cherry flavoring.
The syrup does not contain alcohol additives, sugar or its substitutes, or harmful dyes. This allows it to be given to even the smallest patients, without harm to their health.
Release forms and composition
Prospan is presented on the pharmacological market in several forms:
- syrup (in glass containers and sachets);
- drops for inhalation and oral administration;
- effervescent tablets.
The active substance of the medicine is an extract from ivy leaves.
The syrup is a viscous dark yellow liquid with a pleasant odor. Sold in dark glass containers of 100 and 200 ml, as well as in 5 ml bags. 1 ml of the mixture contains 7 mg of the active substance; potassium sorbate, citric acid, and 70% sorbitol solution are used as auxiliary compounds. The syrup in the bottles contains cherry flavoring, and the sachet contains orange flavoring. The composition also includes ethyl alcohol as a solvent.
The drops are a brown substance with a specific aroma. Sold in dark glass bottles of various capacities (100, 50 and 20 ml). The composition, in addition to ivy extract, includes alcohol, mint, anise and fennel oils, sodium saccharinate.
According to the instructions, effervescent tablets must be diluted with water. The result is a yellowish liquid with a pleasant orange aroma. In addition to the active ingredient, the tablets contain ethanol, citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, sorbitol, and sodium saccharinate. Sold in the form of double strips, packaged in cardboard packages (5 or 10 strips each).
Pharmacological properties and indications for use
Prospan does not affect the sensitivity of the cough center in the brain, so the patient does not stop coughing. However, the drug relieves spasm from the bronchi and increases their lumen, thins mucus and promotes its movement outward, and affects the functioning of the bronchial glands.
In addition, the syrup has a slight antimicrobial and antifungal effect, which helps fight pathogenic microflora that may cause cough.
Prospan is prescribed in the complex treatment of inflammatory diseases that are accompanied by cough, sputum production or bronchial obstruction. For example, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu or acute respiratory infections.
Indications for use
The drug Prospan is prescribed as one of the elements of complex therapy for pathologies of the respiratory tract and lungs. It has an expectorant effect, relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchi, thins viscous mucus, making it easier to cough up.
The medicine is used in the treatment of the following pathologies:
Drops Prospan
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
- pneumonia;
- sclerosing laryngotracheitis;
- acute and chronic bronchitis;
- ARVI, ARZ.
Prospan relaxes the branches of the respiratory tree well, promoting the formation of bronchial secretions during a dry cough. The medicine also thins out too viscous and thick sputum, making it easier to clear during a wet cough.
If the sputum has a liquid consistency and is easily separated, then you should not take Prospan: the drug will cause it to settle in the lower respiratory tract and can cause an attack of suffocation.
Dosage for children
Each bottle of the medicine comes with a special measuring cup, which is convenient for dosing the syrup. Before each use, the container with the product must be shaken thoroughly, since the main components sink to the bottom of the jar, and after use, screw the cap tightly so that the medicine does not erode.
Babies under one year of age are allowed to give Prospan only after prescription by the attending physician.
During the day, infants can consume no more than 2.5-3 ml of syrup, which should be distributed over several doses. Do not overload your small body with excessive amounts of medications.
At the age of 1 to 5 years, the drug is taken orally three times a day, 2.5 ml. Up to 9 years, the single dose is doubled. Patients over 10 years of age are allowed to give 5-7.5 ml of Prospan at a time three times a day.
The course of treatment should last at least 7-10 days, sometimes in order to prevent relapses, therapy is continued for several more days after the disappearance of clinical manifestations.
If after taking the medicine the clinical picture does not fade away or appears with renewed vigor, you should consult a doctor. The specialist will adjust the dose and duration of treatment or change the drug to a stronger drug.
Restrictions on use
The drug should absolutely not be taken if you are allergic to its ingredients. The following pathologies are contraindications to the use of Prospan:
Taking medication for diabetes is contraindicated
- diabetes;
- fructose intolerance;
- alcohol addiction;
- pathologies for which ethanol intake is contraindicated;
- bronchial asthma;
- tendency to spasm of the laryngeal muscles.
Prospan is contraindicated for use in the treatment of infants under one year of age. There is no information on the safety of taking the drug during pregnancy and lactation.
Prospan is prescribed with caution for organic lesions and brain damage, and liver pathologies.
Oversleep during pregnancy
Experimentally, it was not possible to determine any effect on the fetus when taking Prospan during pregnancy. Therefore, the drug is allowed to be used by pregnant girls, but only as directed and under the supervision of a doctor.
Breastfeeding mothers can also use the medicine to treat cough, since it is not able to pass into breast milk.
Inhalations with Prospan
Sometimes taking Prospan only orally is not enough, then doctors can prescribe inhalation of the drug using a special device - a nebulizer. Its principle is based on aerosol spraying of inhalation solutions.
For inhalation, not syrup is used, but special drops, which are diluted in an isotonic solution and filled with them into the inhaler cup. For the best effect, you need to take from 3 to 5 procedures per day, and the number of drops per dose ranges from 10-25. The dose depends on the age and health of the patient.
Instructions for use and dosage
The syrup is dosed using a measuring cup, which is included in the package. The minimum duration of treatment is 7 days. To consolidate the result, after the cough disappears, the syrup is given to the child for another two to three days. If no therapeutic effect is observed, you should consult a doctor.
Dosages of Prospan cough syrup for children:
- up to 1 year – 5 ml per day divided into two doses;
- 1-6 years – 7.5 ml per day in three doses;
- from 6 to 12 years – 15 ml for three doses.
Before use, you need to shake the bottle with the drug.
Drops for oral use are given in the following dosages:
- from 1 to 3 years – 40 drops in 4 doses;
- from 4 to 7 years – 60 drops 4 times;
- from 7 years – 80 drops for 4-5 doses per day.
Drops should be given before meals. For your baby, you can dilute the drug with a small amount of water. Reception is also continued after the symptoms disappear in order to consolidate the therapeutic effect.
Instructions for use in inhalations:
- add 25 drops of solution into the nebulizer;
- add 50 drops of clean drinking water without gas and dyes;
- spray for 15-30 minutes;
- repeat the procedure 4 times a day.
Dilution with water is necessary to prevent irritation with ethyl alcohol and spasms of the larynx. The temperature of the resulting solution should be room temperature. For the procedure, you can use any inhalation devices that do not heat the drug, but spray it.
Drug interactions with other drugs
The drug itself does not interact with other drugs, so it can be taken simultaneously with almost any other medication.
Exceptions are drugs that block cough receptors in the brain, as a result of which a person stops coughing. Sputum accumulates in the bronchi and trachea, makes breathing difficult, and damages the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. In addition, favorable conditions are created for the active reproduction of pathogenic microflora, which only aggravates the disease.
Correct storage conditions
It is important to store the bottle in a place where small children, who are attracted by the sweet taste of Prospan, cannot reach. The room where the medicine is kept must have a certain temperature - no more than 25 degrees, otherwise the medicine may deteriorate.
In a closed bottle, the syrup remains suitable for 3 years, and after opening it must be used within 3 months.
Over time, the syrup may change its color, taste or smell differently, but this does not change its medicinal properties.
Contraindications
Despite the fact that Prospan is a herbal remedy, it also has a small list of contraindications.
It is not advisable to use it to treat cough in the following situations:
- the body's immunity to fructose;
- increased allergic sensitivity to any components of the drug;
- deficiency of sucrose or isomaltase.
Children with diabetes should take it with caution.
Side effects
In case of uncontrolled use of Prospan or in children with hypersensitivity, the following side effects may be observed:
- hives;
- Quincke's edema;
- allergic rashes, diathesis;
- carry - sorbitol, which is part of the drug, has a laxative effect on the body.
If such symptoms appear, you should stop taking the drug and consult a doctor to adjust the treatment.
Instructions for use
You can take Prospan syrup both before and after meals.
The duration of the treatment course depends on the severity of the disease and is at least a week. The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor. The drug should be taken for the entire recommended period, even if the symptoms have completely disappeared.
It is recommended to drink drops according to the instructions before meals. To treat children, it is necessary to dilute the medicine with a small amount of water before taking it.
The syrup can be used at any time, regardless of meals. The prescribed dose is easy to determine, since the syrup package contains a measuring cup.
Inhalations can be done using a nebulizer or inhaler. To prevent possible irritation of the mucous membranes with ethanol, both children and adults should dilute the drops with water before inhalation.
Use during pregnancy
For pregnant women, all medications are prescribed exclusively by a doctor, who will determine the possible risks. Prospan is not recommended for use during breastfeeding.
Use in children
You can give Prospan to children only as prescribed by a doctor.
If your baby coughs, sneezes, suffers from a sore throat, or often wakes up at night, you need to show him to a doctor. It is strictly unacceptable to give the drug to a child on your own. Only a pediatrician can prescribe Prospan for childhood illnesses accompanied by cough after examination. If there is no positive dynamics on the third day of treatment, you should consult a doctor.
According to the instructions, treatment of children under one year of age is prohibited with all dosage forms, with the exception of syrup; inhalation administration is allowed from the age of two. Syrup for children Prospan can be given to infants from the first months of life. The duration of treatment and dosage are selected by the pediatrician based on individual indications.
The drug Prospan cannot be used with drugs that suppress the cough center, as this makes it difficult to remove sputum and can cause suffocation. It is also not recommended to drink alcoholic beverages during therapy with this drug, as this can lead to ethanol intoxication. Prospan can be taken together with antibiotics and antiviral agents as part of complex therapy for infectious diseases of the respiratory tract.
Analogs
If there is such a need, the doctor can select analogues of Prospan. They can have a similar composition and the same main component, or have the same effect on the body, but differ in components.
- Gedelix is in the same price category, the main component is ivy, but the excipients are somewhat different. Has a stronger expectorant and relaxing effect. In addition, an open bottle can be stored for up to 6 months.
- Lazolvan is a product based on ambroxol. It is not made from plant components, but has a more pronounced therapeutic effect. It is possible to take Lazolvan and Prospan simultaneously.
- Ambrobene is a drug identical to Lazolvan, but is produced by a different pharmacological company.
You should not replace one drug with another on your own, since each of them has its own list of indications, contraindications and side effects.
