Why does a baby sleep little during the day, Dr. Komarovsky

Home » Children » What are the reasons for a newborn’s poor daytime and night sleep, Dr. Komarovsky on why the child does not sleep

In the first year of life, sleep is an unstable concept for many children. It is very difficult to maintain a sleep schedule in children under one year old, since there is a problem of frequent awakenings during night and daytime sleep.

Frequent awakenings, short sleep duration, whining and crying in sleep often worry parents.

What standards determine normal sleep in babies and what should parents worry about?

About sleep in general

Children need naps during the day. The baby explores the world, sometimes very actively, and the abundance of impressions greatly exhausts him.

Sleeping during the day allows you to restore strength, give rest to the nervous system and the entire body as a whole. It is important for a growing person in the same way as nutrition and treatment if the baby is sick. During sleep, the composition of the blood is renewed, the muscles and musculoskeletal system rest, the most important enzymes and many vital hormones are produced.

Sleep norm is a rather vague concept, but it nevertheless exists. A baby sleeps longer than a baby after one year. It is considered normal for a newborn to snore sweetly in the crib after each feeding, for a total of 19-22 hours a day. From 1 to 3 months, the child takes 3-4 daytime naps; taking into account the night time, they sleep up to 17 hours a day. From 4 months, the child can lie down during the day 2-3 times for 3 hours, and together with the night sleeps in total up to 15-16 hours a day.

At the age of 1 to 2 years, a child can sleep once during the day, or can be latched twice for 2-3 hours. Pediatricians recommend switching a child to one nap during the day from the age of 2. Kindergarten starts around this time, so it’s usually an easy transition to make. The duration of quiet time for such a child is from 1 to 3 hours.

However, it is impossible to measure all children by existing standards, because children have different temperaments, impressionability levels, and the ability to switch from activity to rest. Maybe that’s why the norms remain norms on paper, but in reality the statistics vary greatly. But this does not lose the value of daytime sleep.

Why doesn't a newborn baby sleep at night?

Many parents have questions about the behavior of a child under one year old during sleep. The baby may whine and wake up up to 3 times during the night - this is the norm.

After such an awakening, the child immediately calms down and falls asleep, but if parents are constantly overprotective and reassure the baby, this can lead to sleep disturbances.

To avoid unnecessary panic, it is worth distinguishing pathology from the norm and understanding what reasons there are for the baby to wake up.

Why does a newborn baby not sleep at night:

  1. The baby may be bothered by colic that appears after feeding. Newborns eat every 3 hours, swallowing air, which is why colic occurs so often.
  2. Disruption of the baby's biorhythm will lead to disruption of night sleep. If the baby often wakes up at night, but sleeps well during the day, then there has been a change of day and night.
  3. The psychological microclimate in the house affects the quality of the baby's sleep. If parents constantly argue, then sleep disturbance is guaranteed.
  4. Deterioration in the baby's physical condition. When the body temperature is elevated, there are pains of various types, and there is an inflammatory process, the baby will not sleep at any time of the day.
  5. A poorly secured diaper, a wet diaper and other causes of discomfort will cause you to be awake at night.
  6. Overstimulation often causes poor night sleep. Frequent guests and bright events have an adverse effect on the baby’s nervous system.
  7. A hungry baby will not go to sleep if he is rocked to sleep for a long time. In the case when the baby constantly asks to eat, which is why he constantly wakes up, then it is necessary to introduce nourishing complementary foods.
  8. The crib is too hot or cold, so the baby cannot sleep soundly.

You can determine discomfort by the baby’s behavior: he grunts, constantly moves, opens his eyes.

You need to check the conditions created for sleep. By eliminating unfavorable factors, parents will be able to sleep peacefully at night with their baby.

Doctor Komarovsky's opinion

The only thing that does not depend on parents in organizing children's sleep is a diaper, says Evgeny Komarovsky. If mom and dad spared no expense and bought a good, high-quality and comfortable diaper, then this is already half the success, since discomfort and dampness are the most common causes of children’s sleep disturbances. There is no need to invent anything here, says the doctor, everything has already been created and should benefit both children and adults.

Parents have to do the rest themselves. Usually, the baby sleeps better at night if he has had a good rest during the day. However, you shouldn’t think that a good night’s sleep means too much sleep. After all, it is clear that a baby who has slept all day long will be awake at night. Therefore, proper planning of daytime sleep will help solve some disturbances in this process at night.

The need for daytime sleep

Official medicine believes that daytime sleep is necessary for a child until he reaches the age of seven. Evgeny Komarovsky is sure that after five years a child no longer needs daytime dreams.

However, if the baby stopped sleeping during the day at 2 years old, then this is a reason to understand the reasons, make adjustments to the daily routine and return daytime rest back as soon as possible. The child is still too young to lead a normal life from night to night without rest.

Evgeny Komarovsky calls on parents to carefully analyze the baby’s lifestyle. Is he eating well, is he not being overfed, is he getting enough fresh air, is the temperature and humidity in the children's room normal. All these factors, according to the doctor, have a direct impact on the quality (and quantity!) of sleep.

The baby's bed should be comfortable, and underwear and pajamas are made from natural fabrics, which are pleasant to the baby and do not interfere with his sleep. The room should have fresh air, the temperature of which does not exceed 20 degrees, and the humidity - 50-70%.

Dr. Komarovsky will tell you more about this in the video below.

Mode correction

A big mistake parents make is to adapt to their child. The baby was brought from the maternity hospital, and mom and dad began to sleep when a small family member allows them to do so. Komarovsky advises immediately transferring the child to the regime that is acceptable for all household members, and not vice versa.

Once you decide on nighttime sleep, you can plan daytime sleep, knowing the average norms for the total amount of time that babies at a given age should devote to sleep. This will require discipline, first of all, from the parents themselves, because the regime they created will have to be observed first of all by themselves, then the child will be able to quickly accept the daily routine as something completely natural.

Evgeniy Olegovich advises, without any doubt or remorse, to wake up a baby who is sleepy during the day so that he does not have problems falling asleep at night, and the daily routine built with such difficulty does not collapse overnight.

In order for your child to go to bed more willingly during the day, the doctor recommends thinking about his leisure time in the first half of the day, in the morning. It’s good if it’s active games, physical activity, according to age, massage or gymnastics, and definitely a walk in the fresh air. After the child eats for lunch, he will not have to be persuaded to sleep, he will really want it himself.

The less healthy activity, the worse the child’s daytime sleep. Therefore, if parents complain that the child “usually sleeps well during the day, but recently he has stopped going to bed,” Evgeniy Olegovich advises simply to reconsider his lifestyle, add walks, sports, and come up with new entertainment.

    Pay special attention to the mattress on which the child sleeps.

    It should be smooth and not press through. It is best to choose an orthopedic mattress.

    Until the age of 2 years, a child should sleep without a pillow.

    This is the recommendation of Evgeny Komarovsky. After two years, parents can give their baby a pillow if they wish, but its size should not be adult size. The optimal thickness of the pillow is equal to the size of the child's shoulder.

    If no home measures to improve daytime sleep help, Komarovsky recommends contacting a pediatrician, psychologist and child neurologist; they will help identify the hidden causes of sleep disturbances and help eliminate them. It is important to do this without leaving the problem to chance, if only for the reason that sometimes the pain prevents the baby from sleeping peacefully during quiet hours. Finding and neutralizing is the common task of parents and doctors in this situation.

He sleeps much more and for his health, as well as for the comfort of all family members, children's holidays must be organized correctly. According to Dr. Komarovsky, a child’s sleep is automatically equal to the sleep of all family members, and therefore their health.

At first glance, everything is very simple, but only in rare cases do parents manage to avoid problems with organizing sleep and a proper, comfortable routine. As a result, we have a nervous, capricious, hysterical child and a completely exhausted mother. There are several fairly simple rules, strict adherence to which will help improve your baby's sleep.

Why does a baby sleep poorly during the day and wake up often?

Daytime sleep has a direct impact on the quality of your night's rest. It is difficult to calculate exactly how much sleep a child should sleep, but still certain limits exist and must be followed.

Parents spend days trying to understand the reason for poor daytime sleep and often complain about the baby’s character. In fact, the factors may be different.

Why is your baby’s daytime rest poor quality:

But sometimes such a jump is too early for the child’s nervous system. He gets tired quickly, and the braking process takes a lot of time

Rules for healthy children's sleep according to Komarovsky

First of all, you need to correctly prioritize in the family and understand that the sleep and health of parents is no less important than that of children and they have every right to sleep 8 hours a day. Believe me, what any child needs most is happy, loving and productive parents.

As Komarovsky has repeatedly emphasized and advised, a baby’s sleep must necessarily be subordinated to a regime that is built not around the child, but based on the interests of all family members. It needs to be built starting from birth. Mom must decide on the time of night's sleep, here you can completely rely on your interests and choose rest hours, for example, from 22 to 6 am or from 21 to 5, the main thing is to adhere to the established time frame. As the child gets older, the daily routine is adjusted to suit the child's changing needs.

From the first days of a child's arrival in the house, young parents wonder where and with whom it is better for him to sleep? There are three options here:

  • baby cot in the parents' room (optimally up to one year);
  • a crib in the nursery (optimally after one year);
  • sleeping in bed with parents (not recommended by pediatricians and is not a guarantee of healthy rest).

To ensure that your child sleeps peacefully at night, do not allow excessive sleep during the day and do not be afraid to wake up the sleepyhead. If, for example, for a one-year-old child the daily sleep requirement is 13.5 hours and 8 of them are allocated for nighttime sleep, then daytime sleep should not exceed 5.5 hours.

For many parents, optimizing feeding becomes the most difficult obstacle to healthy sleep and proper sleep patterns. Remember, from the moment of birth until 3 months it is normal for a child to eat 1-2 times a night, from 3 to 6 months - a single feeding is allowed, after six months the child has no real need to eat at night. The best option would be to feed the baby as nutritiously as possible at night and not allow the mother to be used only to satisfy the need for sucking.

A good rest at night is the result of an active day, make this your motto and build a routine so that you spend maximum time in the fresh air and play active games. In the evening, on the contrary, it is better to choose quiet games or read books.

01 The air in the bedroom should always be clean, cool (18-20 degrees) and humid (50-70%), this rule should be followed regardless of the child’s age. Ventilate before going to bed, do wet cleaning regularly, if necessary, purchase an air humidifier. Use bathing as an additional factor of fatigue by giving your child a massage and gymnastics before it.

02 The children's mattress should be uniform and dense, not sag under the weight of the child. Pillows are not needed for children under 2 years of age. Bed linen should be made from natural fabrics. Komarovsky believes that a common reason that a child sweats in his sleep is a bed made of synthetic material.

03 And, of course, the most important ally of parents in the fight for a peaceful sleep for their baby is a high-quality disposable diaper. This rule is the easiest to implement in practice, but its importance is difficult to overestimate.

The child does not sleep well during the day: fixing the problem

There may be several reasons for this. If you do not take into account whether the baby has any diseases (this is a completely different topic), then the most common ones can be listed as follows:

  • not fully formed digestive system and intestinal microflora;
  • lack of a daily routine (we recommend reading: what should a newborn’s daily routine be like in the first month?);
  • hunger or thirst;
  • stuffiness and too high air temperature in the room;
  • wet diapers;
  • uncomfortable clothing or bed surface;
  • loud sounds and excessively bright lights.

It takes several months for the newborn’s intestinal microflora to form. During this process, the baby often experiences colic, pain, discomfort, and gas builds up. Of course, it is very important that the mother follows a diet during pregnancy, but in any case, you have to live with it for some time. To help your baby, you can give him some dill water, and after feeding, keep him in an upright position for 15-20 minutes.

An unestablished daily routine does not have a very good effect on daytime sleep. If this is the only reason, then from the second month you can establish a routine and the baby will sleep better.

From hunger or thirst, the baby may wake up suddenly or not fall asleep until he is fed. Every mother knows that if you feed a hungry baby, he will immediately fall asleep safely.

Wet diapers and uncomfortable clothes are completely individual factors. There are children who do not react at all to any inconvenience, and there are those who make a fuss as soon as they wet themselves.

As for loud sounds and bright lights, such things are often not very noticeable to a newborn baby. Even if he does not react in any way, it is better to eliminate these factors so that they do not irritate the fragile nervous system. Let the child be in a calm, comfortable environment all day long.

What to do if your child sweats in his sleep?

Poor sleep may be due to the fact that the child sweats in his sleep; Komarovsky names a variety of reasons, but they all stem from non-compliance with the rules described above. If the temperature and humidity are optimal, the baby does not sleep on synthetic underwear and there are no real health complaints, increased sweating can be caused by the individual characteristics of the autonomic nervous system. Another factor that worries parents is that the child grinds his teeth in his sleep. Komarovsky claims that neither pediatricians nor physiologists, despite many years of studying this issue, can name clear reasons, but are convinced that this is not a disease and over time the child will stop do so.

Sleep and illness

Alarming symptoms include waking up or wanting to sleep at an unusual time for the child. Parents should be vigilant and observant - take the temperature, ask the child about his condition, check during sleep. Komarovsky advises not to immediately attribute a child’s red throat to a sore throat or an acute respiratory infection, starting immediate self-medication. There can be many reasons, and here it is better to consult a pediatrician and follow his recommendations.

Increased drowsiness is the main sign of elevated temperature and lack of fluid in the body; if the child categorically refuses to drink or swallow medications, this is an indication for hospitalization. During illness, the mandatory conditions for sleeping are warm clothes and cool, fresh, moist air. Disruption of sleep patterns during illness is normal, but restoring it is the key to a speedy recovery.

I would like to note that all children are different, not only in character, but also in the needs of the body, i.e. in total we will reach the “average temperature in the hospital.” My daughter slept for 6 hours from 0 to 6 months. and 8 or more after 6 months. At that time, Komarovsky was not yet on TV or on the Internet, or at least as famous. but I had about the same rules and yes, my daughter slept. BUT my friend’s son is the same age as my daughter. No matter what she did, he woke up at night for supplemental feeding, and not until he was a year old. To this day he wakes up at 2 - 3 am to drink water. he is already 8 years old and of course he doesn’t wake up his mother, but simply takes a glass from the nightstand, drinks and goes to bed. Well, here he is. He never had any hyperactivity or other problems! I’ll go over the controversial issues separately “Rule 3. Decide where to sleep and with whom. “sleeping in the same bed with my parents” is not acceptable for me, I don’t sleep normally when my child is nearby, I’m half asleep, so this was not an option for me. someone is sleeping, but here you need to understand the line, after 6 months the baby doesn’t need his mother so much, there are no longer constant colics and you can safely move Masik to his own bed. So that it’s not like some of my friends, a 5-year-old boy sleeps with his parents. I have one question: “do they have an intimate life?” It’s natural that if you have colic, if you’re overexcited, if you’re sick, etc. Sleeping together is definitely a solution, so you can at least get some sleep. “Rule 4. Don’t be afraid to wake up the sleepyhead.” “He’s sleeping, he needs it, how can I wake him up?” and now citizens the question is, do we raise children according to natural or social. by nature? then sleep when he sleeps, feed on demand, do not use diapers and do not prevent the child from exploring the world with his mouth! No? diaper on the bottom and “you can’t eat sand!”? Well then you know better and grow socially. so for those like this. if a child has slept for 3-3.5 hours, he will not be capricious if he is healthy and has not confused day with night (and if he has confused it, either straighten it out or sleep at the same time as him). all the whims are either due to a broken regime or due to poor health. I struggled with the first one and we lived by the hour, but with the second one, well, what can we do, but I know roughly what when, I’m an attentive mother. “Rule 5. Optimize feeding. The child may want to be held, the child may demand communication, sucking, hissing...” It can easily. sleep has a deep phase and a superficial one. So in the superficial, it’s very easy to wake us up (any person), for example, by a rustle from the street or at home, by the light from headlights, or who knows what. the child slept for 3 - 3.5 hours, he basically doesn’t want to sleep (he sleeps like this during the day and his body only needs a couple of hours of wakefulness) he doesn’t know how to put himself to sleep, what should he do? having fun right! and here mom and dad are jumping. funny? otherwise! but again we remember that there are natural exceptions, there is well-being, etc. Everyone knows very well (well, I hope) that there are adults with sleep disorders and nothing can be done about it, only sleeping pills. By the way, I discovered sedative tea for myself in a sanatorium (herbal bar) (herbs), although already for an adult child (8 years old), but now, with the second one, I plan to study this issue more closely. I know that mint and chamomile are okay, but I’ll read about motherwort and St. John’s wort. Even an 8-year-old girl slept with such herbal tea, provided that she had not slept during the day for a couple of years (well, here the effect is not only of tea but also of activity, but without tea it is impossible to get to sleep), and after sleep she was more active and cheerful. “Rule 6. Have a good day” is a sacred rule that still works to this day with a child who is no longer small: the more the baby runs away, the better he sleeps. The main thing is to reduce activity before bedtime. “Rule 7. Think about the air in the bedroom” I didn’t believe when my daughter was little, but in vain. Only a couple of years ago I noticed that she sleeps much better in a cool room under a blanket than in a warm one. I found out when I was struggling for daytime sleep at the age of 5-6. The main thing here is to take into account so that the baby does not freeze: warm clothes or a blanket if it does not open. Now I've switched to it myself. Before going to bed, I open the window for myself (even in winter it’s down to -5) and dive under the blanket, although I’m very thermophilic and when I’m awake I need a temperature in my apartment of 26-27 degrees, otherwise I’m freezing. In a dream, thermoregulation works differently somehow. I won’t guarantee that everything works with every child, but if you know children the same age, you will see how different they are, and having gone through this path once, I will never say that I’m a pro, but there are rules that apply to many . I’m not a fan of Komarovsky, it’s just that some of his views were close to me initially, when he just started broadcasting from blue screens, I learned something new, I completely disagree with something, but with advice for sleeping - definitely yes. Have a good sleep and good mood everyone!

19/11/2016 21:16

I’ll also add that if Komorowski was calm about the crying of his children until those exhausted ones simply passed out from fatigue, I highly do not welcome this! And I think that parents who do this to their children are not very healthy mentally, since only abnormal people can endure a child’s crying and do nothing, neither rock them, nor sing, nor offer breasts. As for these rules: Rule 1. Set your priorities - you just discovered America! People need to sleep, but we had no idea about this before!

Rule 2. Decide on a sleep schedule - we follow all procedures at the same time every day

Rule 3. Decide where to sleep and with whom - the 5-month-old baby sleeps with us, and this is not a newfangled decision, but at least some chance of sleep!

Rule 4. Don’t be afraid to wake up the sleepyhead - it would be very interesting to see Komarovsky waking up the baby and then how he suffers for half a day with a capricious child, oh yes, he just lets the children cry. But we don’t have any problems with this, and we don’t even get our daily dose.

Rule 5. Optimize feeding - this is probably the most dibilism, at 5 months the child screams at night because he just wants to be held, communicate, suck, or get motion sickness?! Seriously? Is a child’s brain already mature enough to understand such things and scream at his parents at night? The child wakes up and is like, “Hmm, what do I want?” Let them sing songs to me! “After all, according to Komarovsky, from the fact that parents sometimes sing songs to the child, he becomes so smart that his 5-month-old brain already understands what these sounds are, understands the whole complex system of blackmail and how to force parents to do what he wants! To understand whether a child wants to eat or suck, all you have to do is offer him a pacifier and it immediately becomes clear what the child wants, and the dad, who by the way has to go to work in the morning, is now in shock at Komarovsky, it’s not at all fun to rock a baby to sleep at midnight! He is forced to do this so that the child’s crying does not make him go crazy. “Set the rules of the game once and for all.” The tone of such advice is truly infuriating! What games! Is a child an enemy to his parents? His brain is already so developed that he could plan to blackmail his parents by screaming?! Parents don't get the slightest bit of pleasure from tormenting their child!

Rule 6. Have a good day - we spend time as actively as the baby’s age allows, exploring the apartment, looking at colors, playing with rattles and educational toys (for example, with different textures and materials, etc.) we walk when the weather permits, it’s winter and you can’t really go for a walk , here in Siberia, from the beginning of autumn from -15 and quickly reaches -30 with an icy wind and strong ice.

Rule 7. Think about the air in the bedroom - we specially bought a weather station so that everything would always be according to the rules, and a humidifier and air conditioner. Firstly - 20 degrees? Seriously? Personally, it’s cold for me, I’m freezing! 24 is optimal for us

Rule 8. Take advantage of swimming opportunities At 21:00 we have a relaxing massage and gymnastics, then a bath, water temperature is 33-34 degrees, before this we feed two hours before, that is, at about 19:00, no later, so that you get hungry, swimming, then eating and singing, but all this does not lead to sound and long sleep! Rule 9. Prepare the bed - everything has been done according to Komarovsky’s recommendations

Rule 10. Take care of a quality diaper - we have high-quality, good disposable diapers

We did everything in our power and followed all the recommendations, but we have no sleep! I am very angry with Komarovsky, and first of all for his arrogant tone in such articles, as if parents like to suffer!

19/11/2016 19:11

These tips didn't help us at all. Throughout the pregnancy we were preparing for the birth of the child, and we read books and watched programs. Dr. Komarovsky said so confidently that if these rules are followed, everything will be fine and you will sleep and everyone will be happy. Nonsense! And we have an air conditioner, and we have a humidifier, we take a bath with a massage, and we spend active time with the child and he sleeps no longer than he should during the day, and even, unfortunately, often much less. There is no sleep at night! We haven’t gotten enough sleep for a long time and it’s exhausting the nervous system! These tips are not a panacea, and you shouldn’t think that if you follow them everything will be fine, prepare for the worst, dear parents! Komarovsky apparently means that the child should be allowed to scream, he just lays him down and so that he cries until he calms down and passes out exhausted, but at the same time he does not openly talk about this, why is this? All the time he only hints at this, but is afraid to say it outright. Young parents, don’t rely on him, like we once did, VKS can expect a huge disappointment.

26/10/2016 17:42

Well, that's it. Komarovsky as always. The child and I sleep together, we only wear diapers for walks and then in the morning, not in the evening. We are 5.5 months old. We sit down, mom gets enough sleep, dad is not on the couch... The child eats on demand every 3 hours. I don’t know, but he writes about good diapers.. So I take Japanese Goo.N, a pack lasts us for 2 months. The older, the longer, respectively. But damn, can everyone really afford to buy 4-5 packs of them per month (if they wear them all the time)? They buy cheap ones, and then call it healthy sleep, and allergies are “no big deal.” + pollution. Healthy sleep and a happy child are the key to harmony in the family. And if you listen to Komarovsky in this matter, then children should be comfortable, but dad is always irritated by EVERYTHING, poor thing, and why does he need a child?))) EOC is a good pediatrician, doctor, but many things related to upbringing, pedagogy and especially motherhood, he completely unfamiliar. There are many other world-famous specialists and doctors who think differently. Education should not fall on the shoulders of a creature that is at the mercy of reflexes; this is training, not education. Education is when a person understands cause and effect and you can come to an agreement with him.

And we follow all these recommendations! But the result.....my depression, chronic fatigue and probably already having psychosis, which does not allow me to live a normal life and be an adequate mother, wife and just a person!!!((((My child does not sleep all night. Tossing around, crying, getting up , requires milk. And so for 2 years. From birth. I thought we’d outgrow it. No. I don’t know what to do? I gave up. I lost interest in life. I’m so tired. But the saddest thing is that my husband doesn’t understand me. He thinks that I need a psychologist or psychiatrist. But I just want to sleep((((

My daughter was on breastfeeding for the first 1.5 months. At the same time, a terrible lack of sleep and pumping for half the night completely finished off breastfeeding. At first she ate every three hours, at 24-00, at 3-00, at 6-00... And during the breaks at night, my mother also expressed it all, since she had problems with latch, she ate from a bottle. Then I got tired of this hell. She always slept in her own place, while she was tiny - she would eat and sleep wherever you put her. A little later - with a pacifier. At night they began to increase the interval between feedings, not at 12, but at 1-00, not at 3, but at 5. So they brought it to 24-00 and 6-00. They switched to formula and began to sleep like a king. They never rocked it or carried it in their arms before going to bed. At 8-10 months, the child began to crawl and stand up in the crib after laying down, and later to walk back and forth. Now we just wrap her in a light blanket and open the balcony. It’s cold outside, warm in the blanket, she immediately passes out. During the day you can do the same, in your arms depending on your mood. Now we are 1 year 2 months old, the child goes to bed at 20-00 in a blanket, after 2-3 minutes he is already asleep. At 22-00 the last feeding is from a bottle, it is with hands, the child holds it himself, eats and throws it out of bed. She takes the pacifier that is nearby, shoves it in her mouth and goes to sleep. He almost never wakes up at night. At 6-00 he is already jumping on the bed in a great mood, telling fairy tales. Then he eats, again formula, and can take a nap for a couple more hours. And I'm with her. And daytime sleep is at 12-13 hours for one and a half to two hours. If she clearly doesn’t want to lay down, she runs around until she starts laying down herself in a corner on the floor. If the child is tired and it’s cool around, he’ll simply pass out in a warm crib. At night, I know, sometimes he wakes up, but doesn’t cry. She gets up, looks that everyone is sleeping and it’s dark, finds a pacifier on the bed (she has 5 of them) and lies back down. In the summer I just didn’t sleep well, because it was very hot. Yes, while we sleep in diapers. But if she doesn’t wake up at night, she’s dry in the morning. We got sick only once the entire time, and that was because dad brought such a bad thing that I almost spat out my lungs myself - I coughed. And everything was cured without complications with sea water in the nose and an expectorant based on ivy.

It seems that half of them only read this, which is just a small part of everything written and said by Komarovsky.:) In fact, he is of the opinion that well-rested parents are happiness. And it says that you are sleeping because you are getting enough sleep. Together or separately it doesn't matter. Why do you think that after reading the shortened version you got the whole point? As someone here wrote “turn on your brain” happiness to all

The child was only 4 months old. We have never slept so long and so much. Nowadays, night sleep lasts an average of 7 hours. And during the day, 4 times for an hour. And this has returned to normal, before it was less. Is such a short night's sleep normal? We eat on guard every 2 hours even at night. Sometimes at night the first sleep lasts 3-4 hours, the rest are still 2-2.5. It happens on the contrary, more often for 1.5 hours. We are gaining weight well. She can’t go to sleep on her own; she always has to be rocked to sleep or after breastfeeding. . Before the massages, a month ago I fell asleep on my own. After the massages, I suddenly became very moody for 2 days, requires attention and hands at all times and does not fall asleep on its own.

Tell me what to do if a child sleeps during the day in fits and starts of 30 minutes? Now he can only sleep 4 times for 30 minutes and that’s only 2 hours of daytime sleep at 6 months! In a stroller and crib everything is the same. So from about 2.5 months .At night he sleeps for 10 hours with many awakenings for food and a pacifier. I am terribly tired (And the child often wakes up dissatisfied. According to neurology, ultrasound, um, tomogram and EEG - OK

I didn't understand some things. Please explain to someone who has figured it out. 1. How to establish a sleep schedule that is convenient for parents if the child does not want to fall asleep and wake up at the allotted hours? Maybe this is for older people? My daughter is 3.5 months old. 2. Dr. Komarovsky says not to be afraid to wake up the child so that he does not sleep more than the allotted time. In his book, I read that, on the contrary, he recommends not waking up the child, that the child knows when to eat and when to sleep. Maybe he only meant newborns there. Still, it’s somehow strange to wake up a child and then have him be capricious because he didn’t get enough sleep. If you wake my daughter up, she will simply eat ahead of time, and after an hour and a half she will want to sleep again, i.e. there will be no less sleep. 3. If a child becomes capricious at night, according to the doctor, there is no need to shush him, pick him up, feed him, i.e. come out and let him scream? I feed once or twice a night, maybe more if it's hot.

My child has been sleeping all night since he was 2.5 months old, although the rules are not always followed: the air parameters are not always ideal, especially in the summer it is very difficult to maintain a cool temperature without air conditioning, and we live in a rented apartment. We never bathed in the large bathtub and never kept the water below 34 degrees. But this does not prevent the child from sleeping well (one year and 2 months). For us, in my opinion, other rules became decisive. First of all, going to bed at the same time every day is not difficult at all. Secondly, do not feed the baby continuously; if he hangs on his chest all day, then he probably will not be able to do without it at night. A break of 3 hours is quite normal for a child at any age if he eats enough during feeding. I fed my daughter until she was one year old and it didn’t stop her from sleeping all night. Thirdly, the child falls asleep on his own and in his crib. And this is not at all difficult, provided that the child wants to sleep and nothing bothers him (not hungry, nothing hurts). It is obvious that if a child falls asleep while rocking or under the breast, then when he wakes up at night, he will look for the same rocking and breast. And if he fell asleep himself, then when he wakes up at night he will fall asleep himself, no one will notice that the child woke up. My daughter falls asleep and sleeps with a pacifier, but on her own and in her crib. I am surprised by the questions, how to accustom a child to a crib? A newborn baby sleeps everywhere and always; he doesn’t care where he sleeps. And if you put him in the crib from the very beginning, then you won’t need to retrain him. And a child who wants to sleep will also sleep everywhere. And if you walk and rock a child who doesn’t want to sleep, then of course you can do this for hours. And fourthly, for us the rule about the amount of sleep is very plausible. I have noticed more than once that the longer I sleep during the day, the earlier I wake up in the morning.

Why is napping so important for babies?

An adult spends a third of his life sleeping. Some don’t even allow themselves this, believing that even less is enough for them, because work is more important. A newborn baby needs much more sleep. If for an adult, lack of sleep is fraught with chronic fatigue, decreased performance, and lethargy, then a month-old baby will suffer more.

Everyone knows grandma's statement that children grow in their sleep. Despite the fact that it is often said specifically for better sleep, the grain of truth in it is very large. Indeed, children grow and develop in their sleep and improve their health. A small child, even though he is not very active yet, needs a lot of energy - in a new world for him, he spends more of it than adults. These forces are precisely restored in sleep. The more the baby sleeps, the better his physical development goes.

Strange as it may sound, the psycho-emotional load on a newborn baby is also very noticeable. If he spends enough time in sleep, then his psyche becomes strong and stable. When a child has trouble sleeping during the day, he will:

  • get tired quickly;
  • unnaturally excited and hyperactive (we recommend reading: what to do if you have a hyperactive child?);
  • get sick often due to weak immunity;
  • lag behind in mental and physical development.

The need for a daily routine

Everyone has long known about the daily routine. It is unlikely that anyone will argue with the fact that if you follow the regime, you can solve and prevent many health problems, increase your productivity and move to a new quality of life.

Authoritative pediatrician Evgeny Komarovsky, as well as many other experts, recommend starting to accustom your child to a daily routine as early as possible. This needs to be done gradually, then very soon you will be able to observe the first results. Of course, a newborn baby sleeps almost all the time, but already from the second month he begins to walk a little, the time intervals between meals and sleep increase. Now you can start adjusting the mode. It is important to do this systematically, that is, put the baby to bed at the same time every day, then he will soon get used to it and will fall asleep without problems (of course, provided that he is healthy). The regulated regime will also be of great service to parents, who will have the opportunity to relax, because the health and peace of mind of the baby directly depend on the condition of his mother.

Lack of daytime sleep has a bad effect on the health and general condition, as well as on the development of the child. Fatigue and constant tension can cause disturbances in night sleep, since an overexcited nervous system will not allow the baby to sleep peacefully and will disturb him during sleep for a long time. Children who do not sleep all day may sleep poorly and restlessly at night, wake up for no apparent reason, and the next morning they will be as whiny and tired as the day before after a long busy day.
