Nestle NAN dry milk mixture AR (anti-reflux) 400 g

Regurgitation in newborns is a normal physiological reaction, called “gastroesophageal reflux” in medical terminology. During regurgitation, consumed food is thrown from the stomach into the esophagus.

In adults, reflux sometimes reaches the oral cavity; in the childhood version of reflux, food always reaches the oral cavity and even goes beyond it. Normally, regurgitation does not cause anxiety in the child and does not harm his health. Antireflux mixtures are prescribed by a doctor based on a medical history, a story from the parents about the child’s condition, his examination and examination by a pediatrician.

Antireflux formulas for newborns - what is it?

Regurgitation before the age of one year is a natural process in response to the underdeveloped state of the child's digestive system. The walls of the stomach are not yet elastic enough and tend to reflexively contract. A weak sphincter allows food masses to pass through.

As a rule, the development of reflux during the neonatal period has the following schedule:

  • from birth to 3 months - after each meal;
  • from 3 to 5 months – once every 24 hours;
  • From 6 months, regurgitation gradually stops.

Properties and principle of operation

The anti-reflux mixture for children is based on thickeners, which consist of fibers and activate the work of the stomach. They absorb liquid, then pass further along the digestive tract, continuing to absorb liquid.

This improves the digestion process and peristalsis. The likelihood of regurgitation is significantly reduced. Having reached the end, the thickeners leave the body naturally.

Thickeners have different active ingredients. Their task is to thicken liquid food. The main substances are starch and gum.

Antireflux mixtures containing starch

Starch contains a natural polysaccharide - amylopectin, which consists of glucose residues. Digestion occurs in the small intestine with the help of special enzymes. A distinctive feature of starch from locust bean gum is that it retains the contents of the stomach for a long time, due to which the baby remains feeling full for a long time.

Celia AR is made using starch, thanks to which the baby feels full for a long time

In addition, starch has a fixing effect in products such as Samper Lemolak, Enfamil AR, NAN AR, Celia AR, Similak AR. Only the Nutrilon Comfort mixture contains “pregelatinized” starch, which is a mixture of corn and potato starch. Thanks to this content, starch will not be able to cause constipation in the intestines.

Types, detailed composition, calorie content

The mixtures contain 1 of 3 types of starch:

  • from potatoes;
  • from rice;
  • from corn.

Gum

The features of this thickener are the properties of its fibers. Once in the stomach, they are not digested or absorbed, but are well exposed to intestinal enzymes. This property makes it possible to have a therapeutic effect on all parts of the intestine, their microflora and peristalsis. As a result of all the effects, metabolism accelerates.

Gum also helps eliminate constipation, so simultaneously prescribing these mixtures solves 2 serious problems at once. The therapeutic effect occurs after 1 month of use.

Similar mixtures are produced by the following manufacturers:

  • Nutrilak;
  • Frisov;
  • Humana;
  • Bellact;
  • Grandma's basket.

In addition to gum, anti-regurgitation mixtures contain a large amount of vitamins and microelements, and the amount of lactose is reduced when compared with the classic product. At the same time, mixtures with gum always contain more lactose than products with starch. Almost all mixtures contain maltodextrin. Palm oil is present in most products.

Starch

Anti-reflux formula for newborns based on starch works due to the amylopectin component. It is a highly nutritious product and has a binding effect, which guarantees a long-lasting feeling of fullness. This mixture is quite thick, which should be taken into account when using a bottle for feeding.

Mixtures containing starch are prescribed if the child has normal stools without signs of constipation or diarrhea. Sometimes these types of formulas are used when a child suffers from diarrhea, as the starch has a laxative effect.

Mixtures with lactulose

In addition to anti-reflux formulas, there are products available to address other common childhood problems at this age. Along with antiallergic mixtures, there are mixtures for constipation in newborns.

Such mixtures have the following features:

  • contain a prebiotic - lactulose, which has a laxative and bifidogenic effect;
  • lactulose is not digested in the stomach, but passes further into the intestines, where it does its main job;
  • stimulates good peristalsis;
  • normalizes the number of bowel movements in children prone to constipation by increasing the number;
  • the consistency of the stool is normalized, it acquires features characteristic of this age;
  • The microflora of the gastrointestinal tract is replenished with bifidobacteria and lactobacilli.

The product with lactulose is used according to 2 schemes:

  • as the main type of food for a bottle-fed baby;
  • as a supplement to mother's milk for infants.

Here is a list of manufacturers who produce mixtures for constipation:

  • Semper;
  • Nestozhen;

Composition and properties of the product

It is important for parents to know that the medicinal mixture cannot be given as a preventive measure, but only when necessary. For example, if the child often spits up and food is not digested at all. Typically, antireflux drugs are taken in a course. They eliminate not only the problem, but also the very cause of the condition.

Feeding the anti-reflux formula is done from a bottle, but it is better to feed the baby with a spoon

The therapeutic effect is achieved thanks to three components: casein, gum and starch. An individual product contains only one of these components. Mixtures with casein have a lesser effect than products with gum, which is why they are first introduced into the diet, and if treatment does not help, they switch to mixtures with gum.

All antireflux drugs act similarly: casein, gum or starch swell in the stomach and turn into a dense protein clot that the child is unable to regurgitate. But this food mass is well digested by the intestines, so the baby will not suffer from constipation. Antirefluxes simultaneously help with regurgitation and defecation disorders.

We must not forget that not all the ingredients included in antireflux products are well absorbed by the child’s body. For example, gum can only be digested in the large intestine. In addition, the baby may experience an allergy or other side effects to one of these components. Under no circumstances should you self-medicate.

When is anti-reflux mixture needed?

Before prescribing the mixture, the doctor conducts a conversation with the parents and makes an objective assessment of the child’s health status. The details and features of regurgitation are clarified.

Reflux in children has 2 forms:

  • when normal regurgitation in a child does not cause concern, has short episodes immediately after eating, the child does not cry, regurgitates both breast milk and formula, this reflux is considered uncomplicated and does not require therapy;
  • complicated reflux is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, children react to an episode of regurgitation by crying, slowly gain weight, often suffer from respiratory diseases, including pneumonia, such children require the use of special means and additional examinations.

It is in the second case, when a complicated form of regurgitation is diagnosed, that the use of a medicinal mixture is indicated when the following symptoms are present:

  • regurgitation occurs more often than after each meal;
  • the amount of regurgitated food is equal to the volume of food consumed at one time, as a result of which the child remains hungry;
  • increased formation of gases;
  • colic;
  • change in stool character;
  • vomit.

How to give to a baby while breastfeeding

Breast milk is the primary way of feeding a newborn baby. In any situation, the doctor should try to maintain breastfeeding, combining it with formula if necessary.

If the child is already fed with mother's milk, then the anti-reflux formula is an additive to the main diet and performs a therapeutic, not a curative task.

It is recommended that the infant be given formula from a spoon so that the only thing the sucking reflex is associated with is still the mother's breast. The recommended dose is from 5 to 20 ml at a time. Also, before starting to introduce a special mixture, it is worth ruling out the possibility that the cause of regurgitation is an allergy.

To do this, the mother should temporarily exclude the following foods from her diet:

  • chocolate;
  • coffee;
  • cocoa;
  • citruses;
  • red vegetables and fruits;
  • cow's milk;
  • gluten-containing products;
  • oatmeal.

If after introducing the diet the child’s condition has improved, you should inform your doctor about this.

How do they work?

An anti-reflux mixture used in the treatment of regurgitation is a baby food that does not allow food to come back out, providing the baby with the necessary nutrients and charging him with energy. When these products are consumed, thanks to the addition of thickeners, a dense clot is formed in the baby’s stomach, which prevents regurgitation. A distinctive feature of antireflux mixtures from conventional ones is the presence of the AR mark (from the English Antiregurgitation) on the packaging.

The composition of anti-reflux products is close to breast milk, where whey proteins are contained in larger quantities than caseins, which facilitates easy digestion and absorption. An exception is Nutrilon AR, where the amount of casein exceeds the amount of whey proteins, thereby enhancing the thickener effect.

For babies suffering from regurgitation, there are many medicinal mixtures

There are blends that do not contain palm oil. But everything, according to the type of thickener, can be divided into two types, which are characterized by both common characteristics and distinctive features.

Anti-reflux anti-regurgitation medications are not suitable as primary nutrition. They should be given to the baby in combination with breast milk or an adapted formula. Based on the individual characteristics of your body, the pediatrician will select a mixture for you to prevent regurgitation and tell you how to take it correctly.

Antireflux formula is a medicine, not a food. It does not need to be included in the diet of healthy children. When treating frequent regurgitation, the child should be provided with plenty of fluids. If side effects occur, consult your doctor immediately.

How to give on artificial nutrition

Antireflux mixture is given to children in compliance with several rules:

  • the formula is given to a bottle-fed child separately from the main formula;
  • Children who are not breastfed can be given by bottle;
  • the dry mixture must be diluted in water with an approximate temperature of 50 degrees;

  • the amount of the required dry mixture must be specified in the attached instructions or follow the advice of a doctor;
  • the finished mixture should have a uniform consistency, there should be no lumps;
  • the anti-regurgitation mixture is taken before the main meal;
  • The diluted mixture can be kept in the refrigerator for no more than a day, but if possible, you should prepare a portion of the mixture and use it immediately;
  • It is forbidden to heat the ready-made mixture in a microwave oven; you can only use a water bath or special heating devices for baby food.

Is it possible to give the mixture during breastfeeding?

It is necessary to use a medicinal formula during breastfeeding with great caution (we recommend reading: good medicinal formulas for children with allergies). The baby can be given a small amount of 10-20 ml of the mixture before breastfeeding. For these purposes, you should not use a bottle; it is better to feed the newborn with a teaspoon or use a syringe. If the baby spits up profusely, do not try to switch to mixed or artificial feeding.

How to choose an anti-reflux mixture

When choosing a medicinal mixture, you should adhere to the following recommendations:

  • when purchasing a mixture, you must check the expiration date on the packaging; it must be valid until the end of use of the product;
  • it is important that the age matches the manufacturer’s recommended age, which is indicated on the packaging;
  • the mixture must be correctly selected in composition; in some cases, pediatricians recommend mixtures without gluten, without milk, and in the absence of certain types of oils.

How to prepare the mixture correctly

In order for the mixture to bring maximum benefit, it is important to follow the preparation technology:

  1. Antireflux mixtures should not be mixed with other mixtures.
  2. Most mixtures are diluted with potable water at a temperature of 35-50. Before starting preparation, it is important to check the conditions on the product packaging; some mixtures require a temperature of 80 to 90 degrees for dissolution.
  3. Before starting all manipulations, you need to wash your hands.
  4. All containers used for preparation must be thoroughly washed and sterilized.

  5. Next, the required amount of water is poured into the bottle, then the required number of measuring spoons of the mixture is added.
  6. The bottle must be closed and shaken to completely dissolve the mixture.
  7. The measuring spoon must be returned to the jar with the mixture. It is important to carefully close and put away the jar itself.

At what age, how to introduce a child into a breastfeeding diet

If there is a need to give a mixture for regurgitation to an infant, then there are several important rules:

  • You cannot interrupt breastfeeding and switch to artificial feeding unless there are compelling reasons for this;
  • the antireflux mixture should be given using a teaspoon;
  • the mixture itself is given before the main meal.

It is advisable to use the following chart:

  • on the first day you should give 5 ml of the mixture;
  • the next day the volume is increased to 10 ml at a time;
  • on the fourth day, the volume of the mixture reaches 20 ml at each meal.

Most often, breastfed newborns do not suffer from colic. Abdominal problems begin after some time, usually at the beginning of the second month of life.

At what age, how to introduce a child on artificial nutrition into the diet

For bottle-fed babies, anti-reflux formula can be given from birth, provided that the child weighs 3 kg or more:

  • from the first day of life to the second week, the antireflux mixture is given 7 times a day, diluted with 2 measuring spoons in 60 ml water;

  • from 2 weeks of age to 2 months, the number of feedings is reduced to 6 times a day, and the amount of mixture at a time is reduced to three measuring spoons, which must be diluted in 90 ml of liquid;
  • after 2 months, upon reaching 6 months of age, the number of doses of the antireflux mixture is increased to 5 times a day, the amount of the mixture is determined by the doctor depending on the weight of the child, but no more than 150 liquids and no more than 6 measuring spoons.

Is there any harm possible?

The use of antireflux mixtures is associated with myths and misconceptions about harm that frighten parents.

Misconceptions about possible harmHow things really are
Excessive increase in caloric content due to the properties of thickenersTests have shown that any thickener is not able to significantly increase calorie content
Possible presence of malabsorption, when thickeners interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals from foodReal studies have not shown that thickeners are able to influence the absorption process of substances. Nevertheless, manufacturers include in the mixture all the vitamins and minerals necessary for the child, which compensates for the possible decrease in the intake of substances from food
Fat metabolism disorderObservation of children using such mixtures and monitoring of blood parameters showed that their use does not provoke a deviation of indicators such as “bad” and “good” cholesterol from standard values
Negative effect on intestinal motilityRice starch can actually slow down peristalsis and cause constipation in some children.
If this starch undergoes pre-treatment - pregelatinization, then the effect of slowing down digestion is reduced. Gum has the opposite effect. Possessing a probiotic effect, it enhances peristalsis. In rare exceptions, gum provokes diarrhea.
Allergic reactions to thickenersResearch suggests that gum may cause allergic reactions in some children, but these cases are rare.

Antireflux mixtures are not able to cure gastroesophageal reflux, since they are not drugs. The mixtures help thicken food in the esophagus. By using formulas in the diet, the problem of infant regurgitation is solved without the use of medications for newborns.

Antireflux mixtures containing locust bean gum

This substance belongs to natural polysaccharides, which are obtained from carob fruits. It is also called food additive E 410, which is used in the food industry as a stabilizer, emulsifier and thickener. Gum polysaccharide is a dietary fiber that is not digested in the human stomach with the help of enzymes. Its breakdown can only occur under the influence of microorganisms inhabiting the large intestine. The prebiotic effect is achieved through their growth. Carob gum quickly removes the contents of the stomach into the intestines, thereby preventing constipation. Carob gum is allowed to be added to the product in the amount of 1 g per 100 ml. Due to the fact that the thickener is contained in large quantities, colic and flatulence may occur.

The “Babushkino Lukoshko Antireflux BIO” mixture, like other mixtures, must be administered with caution, as the child may develop an allergy

Carob gum in infant formulas is presented in its natural form or in a modified form (see also: good infant formulas with goat milk). Natural gum is contained in the “Frisovoy” mixture and can only dissolve in hot water at a temperature of 70-80 degrees. The modified gum can dissolve at a temperature of 40-50 degrees and is contained in the following products: “Nutrilon AR”, “Humana AR”, “Nutrilak AR”, “Babushkino Lukoshko Antireflux BIO”, “Bellakt”.
