Baptismal porridge is an old Russian Orthodox rite that was performed on the day of baptism of a newborn, usually on the fortieth day after birth. This is a festive feast organized by happy parents for their closest relatives and family friends.
The main feature of this meal was that porridge was always served on the table, carefully cooked by the midwives, and the celebration itself was accompanied by various rituals, traditions and signs. And the tastier the porridge and the larger the pot it is in, the happier, easier and more joyful the life of the new family member will be.
In the modern world, this tradition has undergone changes: midwives can no longer be found, it is not necessary to baptize a child on the fortieth day of life, but it is important to share the happiness of parenthood with those closest to you. And there are usually a lot of people who want to meet the baby, so holidays in honor of the newborn’s introduction to the world are held quite often.
Let's figure out what main points need to be taken into account so that the first party brings joy to both the guests and mother and baby.
The choice of place for the viewing depends on fantasies, preferences, availability of free time and, of course, the material wealth of the parents. Good financial preparation and the presence of a nanny are quite conducive to holding a holiday outside the home. For example, you can rent a small banquet hall in which there will be no strangers, and all the preparation and decoration efforts will be taken on by cooks, waiters and decorators.
A great idea is to choose a dacha as the venue for the newborn’s porridge. The baby will be comfortable in the fresh air, guests will have freedom of movement throughout the entire space of the house and site.
The most common option is, of course, holding the viewing at home in an environment that is already familiar and familiar to the baby. The baby should not be in the same room with guests all the time, therefore, if you have a one-room apartment, then the guests should be in the kitchen. It’s great when a newborn has his own room with its own microclimate, which will protect him from noise and bacteria and provide you with comfortable feeding and various hygiene procedures.
Be very careful when choosing the number of people invited to the viewing, because the worries about organizing the holiday and subsequent cleaning will fall on your shoulders. It’s good if you have assistants who will take care of preparing the necessary things, accommodating the guests, and then help you clean up.
If you have to cope on your own, prepare a couple of simple dishes or just set a sweet table, after all, it’s a children’s holiday. Therefore, a tea party with a delicious cake will be quite appropriate and will delight the guests. You can emphasize the solemnity of the moment with a themed cake, which will be baked for you to order, and add cookies with wishes to the newborn. If finances allow, simply order ready-made dishes from the restaurant. Traditional porridge is easiest to prepare and serve in a ceramic baking pot.
Bridesmaids, as a rule, have their own style in which the event is decorated. You can take as a basis, for example, the gender of the newborn or his name. You can also choose the theme of your favorite cartoon or fairy tale to decorate the space.
Come up with a couple of competitions and tasks for your guests that are in tune with the theme of the holiday. For example, you can remember all the great people with the baby’s name, offer to write a poem or sing a song, hold a competition for the best toast, and so on. Use your imagination and have fun with your guests! You can repeat the old Russian tradition and sell the right to treat guests to newborn porridge. Or hide a few raisins in the porridge and put them on everyone’s plates. Whoever gets the most raisins will become a parent in the near future.
It’s a question that worries all the invitees, because you want to give a useful gift that won’t gather dust on the shelf and just take up space. Therefore, it is best to think over a list of what the baby will need now or in the future, and send it to guests. This can be any children's gadgets: stroller, high chair, chaise lounge, toys, children's furniture, etc. If you want to purchase such things yourself, then invite your guests to give you money in a beautiful envelope.
A must-see item is a book with wishes for a new family member from relatives and friends. It can be decorated in any style. Imagine how interesting it will be for your grown-up child to look at photos in which he is still very small, and also to read the wishes himself!
Before you start viewing your newborn, do not forget to prepare a camera or video camera. Don't rely on a smartphone that can switch to an incoming call at any time. Then a video with a funny competition or toast may be interrupted at the most inopportune moment, and it is unlikely that you will be able to repeat a cool improvisation.
Your child's first appearance in the world and getting to know the outside world is the most important event in the life of every family. And only you can decide how, when and with whom you are ready to share this significant day. The desires and capabilities of new mothers are completely different, and the temperament of the children must be taken into account. The main thing is to organize the event so that it does not turn out to be exhausting, and you still have strength for yourself and your baby and, of course, pleasant memories.

Newborn baby shower - signs and superstitions
- Showing the baby is allowed only after the 40th day from the moment of birth. And only after baptism. Then, as the ancestors believed, the baby would be ready to meet the world - protected from the evil eye, disease and damage.
- You should not take photographs of a sleeping baby. The explanations for the ban are very vague.
- It is forbidden to kiss the baby on the heels and cheeks. Otherwise, he will be late with his first steps and words.
- The best gift for a baby is a spoon made of gold or silver (so that the baby becomes rich).
If a young mother constantly puts up with viewings or tries to limit you in some way (not with children, not for a long time, not with a runny nose, etc.), don’t be offended! Please be understanding.
If you really can’t wait to see the baby, agree to meet on a walk. You will have time to talk to the mother and look at the baby.
What do you think about the newborn's first visit? It is very important for us to know your opinion!
The ritual of holding porridge (bride) goes back centuries and has its own rules. At one time, this ancient tradition was even slightly forgotten, but now it is gaining new momentum and acquiring modern features. My goal in this article is not to tell a story, but to reveal the important moments of carrying out porridge for a child, so that in the end it really turns out to be a holiday, and not a heavy burden and the fulfillment of some incomprehensible duty.
So, you can carry out the porridge in two ways: at home where the baby was born, and outside the house (in the fresh air or in a cafe). In any case, you need to consider the following points:
— It is not recommended to organize viewings earlier than 1 month. (some people think it’s better after 3 months). First of all, this is necessary so that the body of both mother and child gets stronger. On the other hand, the mother herself must adapt to the new role, and the child must establish a more or less routine (it is much more convenient to plan a celebration when you know what to expect from the culprit, when he will sleep and when he will be awake). At the same time, if you are late with the porridge, then it’s not a big deal. In this case, porridge will be a great reason to see your friends, and even get gifts for your baby.
- You shouldn’t invite too many guests. It’s better to hold the meeting several times, dividing those invited into groups based on interests or some other connections. Otherwise, the parents will get tired, the guests will begin to get bored, the holiday will turn out to be unorganized, and no one will get any pleasure from such an essentially bright event.
- from the previous point, the following reasonably follows: do not plan a holiday for a long time; with a baby, you will not be able to communicate with guests for a long time. The essence of this celebration is to show the new family member to friends/relatives, accept congratulations and receive gifts (although the latter is not necessary, at least not the main thing).
- before inviting guests, think about what gifts you would like to receive.
And when talking later with the invitee, do not be afraid to voice what would be appropriate to give, since very often people simply do not know this, are at a loss and, as a result, buy something unnecessary or the wrong size.
- when inviting guests to your home (especially in the cold season), do not be afraid to warn them that they should come to visit absolutely healthy, so that along with the gifts they do not give you and your child some unpleasant illness.
By the way, health problems for parents and the baby can be avoided if, in advance of the reception, an immunomodulatory agent, such as Grippferon (safe for newborns), is placed in the nose of mother, father and baby. However, this advice also applies in situations where there is a need to get out into a crowded place.
- You should not organize alcohol on the festive table. This is your baby’s first holiday (he is the hero here, and little ones don’t drink alcohol), and the estimated time for it will not allow those sitting at the table to completely relax.
- if the child is not in the mood, then you should not torture him, or the parents, or the guests. Try to convey to your invitees that you have not learned how to carry out the porridge. I'm sure they will understand. It’s better to find another reason to meet later, even if it doesn’t happen soon.
— when organizing the mess, think in advance who you would appoint as your mother’s assistant. As a rule, at porridge, dad entertains the guests, and mom is torn between the child and the festive table. Here it is good to find some experienced friend (or several such friends) who would not be afraid to either hold/calm the baby at the right moment, or help with laying out treats. In this case, it’s good if you decide to spend the porridge in nature - then the child will be in a stroller, and anyone can give him a ride (and there are people, believe me), and thus the young parents will have a free hand.

Here are some simple porridge recipes for children under one year old.
Starting from 8 months of age, porridge for children does not need to be rubbed through a sieve. To prevent your baby from getting tired of porridge, alternate different porridges throughout the week. By this age, you can also introduce porridges made from a cereal mixture.
If a child does not get used to cereals well, you can prepare a cereal decoction for him.
Cereal decoction
You will need: 2 tbsp. l. cereals (rice, buckwheat or barley or oatmeal), a pinch of salt.
Method of preparation: Sort the cereal, rinse and keep in a glass of boiled water for 3 - 4 hours. Cook the cereal in the same water over low heat:
- rice - for 1 hour;
- buckwheat, barley - for 2 hours;
- oatmeal - 20 - 40 minutes.
At the end of cooking, add salt. Strain the finished broth through boiled gauze folded in half.

How to carry out porridge in the house.
The parents themselves will have to prepare the house for receiving guests. You also need to prepare the festive table yourself. But there is a way out - either order food delivered to your home, or invite the guests themselves to bring goodies with them (if desired, this can even be played out beautifully, only here young parents need to think and distribute among the guests who will bring what). In principle, you don’t need a lot of food for a celebration, because the occasion is after all to see the baby; it’s enough just to have a tea party. However, it is worth paying tribute to tradition: it is better to cook the porridge itself. It may be the most ordinary one. But it is believed that porridge should be sweet, and it is good if it contains some dried fruits and nuts.
An undoubted advantage is that you will have everything at hand: diapers, baby diapers, etc.
On the other hand, in order to ensure peace and quiet, it will be possible to place the hero of the occasion in a separate room; the mother can also feed the baby in a familiar environment, calmly, without fuss, away from prying eyes. If this is not possible (for example, the apartment is small), then it is better to get out into nature (wait when it’s not the season, wait for good weather, or change the strategy, invite 1-2 people to the house).
The mother must understand that the child may require attention. In this case, the mother will have to leave the guests, and the father will have to take the initiative to entertain the guests.
One more point: it’s good when volunteers help with cleaning up after the guests (especially if there were a lot of them and there is something to clean up and where). But this is my personal opinion, the reader has the right to disagree with this.
How to spend porridge in the fresh air.
Here you will have to bring with you everything necessary for the child (diapers, bottles with formula, napkins, diapers, a change of clothes, just in case). It is also necessary to provide a place where the mother can calmly feed the baby and change him (this can be a tent with everything necessary, or just a separate, but convenient high chair for feeding).
The best option in terms of resting the baby. Typically, he will sleep in his stroller outdoors most of the time. And if young parents are afraid to give their child to others, then there is an excellent way out so as not to offend their friends: give them the opportunity to push the stroller. Most likely, there will be a queue of such people lining up.
A separate option for holding porridge could be organizing a viewing party in a cafe. But first of all, think about where you will place your child (you may need to take a special lounge chair/swing for the baby), how and where you will feed him (check these points with the administration of the porridge). You should also take measures to protect the baby’s health, because there may be other visitors in the cafe besides you.
And finally, one more piece of advice. When preparing to make porridge for your baby, do not rack your brains with all sorts of rules and subtleties. Remember that guests will come to you to be happy for you. If something goes wrong, it's not a big deal. After all, the main thing is that you have a small miracle! Good luck.
If you have anything to add to my suggestions, feel free to share your ideas.
And if this article helped you, then don’t forget to tell your friends about it so that they also know how to make porridge for a baby.
Secret No. 5: butter, salt and milk
When preparing porridge for a child, it is worth remembering that you cannot look up to an adult. For example, you should not add salt to your baby’s porridge - children’s kidneys are not yet able to cope with such a load. It is also not recommended to add butter - it is too heavy for the child’s digestive system. Additionally, it is better not to overload it.
For babies over 9 months old, you can prepare porridge with milk. True, you can only use low-fat milk. Moreover, it additionally needs to be diluted with boiled water in a 1:1 ratio.

Holiday “Porridge for a newborn”
After thinking a little more, they began to name: Galustyan, Shats, Isakovsky (author of the song Katyusha), Kalashnikov, Michael Jackson, Evdokimov, Mikhai Volontir, Prokhorov, Zadorny, Pugovkin, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Zoshchenko and others.
I am writing in such detail so that you, too, can check your memory.))) After remembering the famous Mikhails, the parents briefly explained why they named their first-born Misha. I wrote about this in the article.
A humorous moment came - and a severe reprimand was read out to the parents of the newborn Mishani. For what? Also read the following article.
The main dish at the “Porridge” holiday was semolina porridge, which was treated to all guests. But the treat came with a secret: Several raisins were hidden in a plate of porridge. Whichever guest has more highlights will be the one to expect a baby in the near future.)))
It is customary to invite only the closest relatives and friends to the viewing. On this day, it is customary to give good gifts to a newborn. And in order not to overshadow this pleasant event, dad and mom usually agree with friends and relatives about who will give what. If you have not yet decided what you need, or are in doubt about your choice, ask your guests for gift certificates. This will give you time to think and choose exactly what you like. Don’t forget to protect your baby from all sorts of bacteria and infections. When everyone is seated at the table, bring out your little one, show him and that’s it. He’s still very tiny for being passed from hand to hand and for long cries.
Props for the holiday:

Presenter (it is better if grandmothers host the festive feast): Dear guests, move closer, let the parents of our baby have everything in kindness and harmony. Now smile at each other so that your baby’s teeth grow strong and healthy. And let's fill our glasses and drink to those who brought our (Baby's name) into the world. For dear parents (names).
We give you time to refresh yourself and have a snack...
One of the guests (assistant): Your appetizer is good, but where is our porridge?
Grandmother brings out a pot of porridge. Each guest eats a spoonful of porridge.
Grandmother: Have you all tasted the porridge in honor of our little one? Our baby neither ate nor drank, he cooked porridge for you all night and therefore now expects congratulations from you.
Guests congratulate, say toasts, give gifts.
Grandmother: And now, according to the ancient custom, we will perform the Kashi ceremony. She wraps the pot in a scarf and hands it to the baby’s dad with a hammer.
Dad breaks the pot. You need to try to break it so that there are a lot of fragments, but not into crumbs.
The grandmother distributes shards to each guest, saying: These shards are for you (Names), so that you have children sooner. Further for those who are single and single, etc. Give the remaining shards for good luck.
One of the guests: We congratulated our friends and parents, gave them gifts, but forgot about our grandparents. But before congratulating, according to custom, I propose to conduct a ceremony of initiation into grandparents:
We cover you with a holy shroud (diaper) And we dedicate you to be grandparents! (touch everyone’s left shoulder with a rattle) To secure these titles, you need to sprinkle them with holy water (sprinkle milk from a bottle with a pacifier or give them a glass to drink)
Grandfathers and grandmothers read the oath: I swear to be an exemplary grandfather and grandmother! I quickly rush from work to the house where my granddaughter lives.
A forced march to the shops for milk, for baby porridge. I swear to do it without mistakes. I swear to get up late at night and rock his cradle. And if you need to quickly change the diaper at any time. I swear to him to wash his diapers and iron his undershirts. I swear to him to read fairy tales when he wants to play hide and seek. He has to do his homework so that he gets A's. I swear to provide money later so that I don’t ask my dad or mom. I swear then I’ll save him some money for a car. In general, from the first day I’ll put him on his neck! And if I break my oath, I get tired, maybe I’m scared, then I won’t drink brandy or eat pineapples forever! Don't drive a Lexus car, don't go out in a mink coat, don't travel the world and don't have a villa by the sea! You can't sunbathe in Miami! I swear to fulfill my oath! -Everyone: I swear! I swear! I swear!
Grandmother: Please, please, I’m delivering the cake to the guests. For each piece we write a wish for the baby on a piece of paper.
Interview to the future: each of the guests is invited to tell the camera what the baby will be like when he grows up.
Well, that seems to be all. I really hope you liked the script.
VIEWING PLACE First of all, decide where you would like to hold this event. Possible places: in your apartment/house, in the courtyard of a country house, in a park, in a cafe or restaurant. If you decide to hold a child's viewing in a cafe or restaurant, rent a whole room so that there are no strangers. If there are few guests, look for a cafe or restaurant with a small banquet hall.
INVITING GUESTS. Next, create a guest list, taking into account how many people can fit in the chosen location. The next step is an invitation to the screening. If possible, it is better to send out invitations. They can be made in the form of a diaper or an unbuttoned vest. If you don’t have time to deal with invitations, call all the guests and invite them verbally.
THEME AND STYLE: It is advisable to think about the theme or style of the event. For example, if a boy was born, you can decorate the venue in blue, if a girl - in pink. Another decor theme is the baby zoo. When choosing this theme, they decorate the location of the holiday with images and figurines of baby animals and chicks. You can use white and silver colors for decoration, using wings and angel figures for decoration. A common theme is environmental. They say, a child was born, and now parents need to lead a healthy lifestyle and take care of the planet on which their grandchildren will live. In this case, the venue for the wedding is decorated in green tones; mainly natural materials are used for decoration and serving: linen tablecloth and napkins, wicker dishes, compositions made of twigs, decorative nests, etc. Do not use balloons for decoration - if the balloon bursts and makes a loud sound, the baby may be very scared. If you are planning a fireworks display, then move it to the end of the event, when the mother (or grandmother, nanny, etc.) and the baby have already left the party.
PROGRESS OF THE HOLIDAY Start the event with a demonstration of the hero of the occasion - let friends and relatives have plenty of time to look at the baby. Then you can invite the guests to say congratulatory words, but very quietly and gently so as not to scare the child. In principle, immediately after this the baby can be taken home. And so that guests don’t get bored without him, place small frames with photographs of the newborn on the tables. You can even, if possible, show the first film about him.
The custom of inviting relatives and friends to the viewing of a newborn is quite ancient. Until the fortieth day, the parents did not talk about the baby and did not let strangers into the house. And after this period, they held a celebration, and sometimes walked for several days. Today, such strict rules are not followed.
