  1. Causes of children's fears
  2. How to fix the situation
  3. Recommendations for proper bathing

Causes of children's fears

Most often, the reason that a child is afraid to bathe in the bath is one of the reasons:

  1. Wrong first bath. It is this that provokes the development of fear of water procedures. Perhaps the water was too hot or, on the contrary, cool.
  2. It is possible that the child swallowed water or shampoo got into his eyes.
  3. The baby could have been scared by some random loud sound. Now he has unpleasant associations with bathing.
  4. The child slipped and fell in the bathroom. After this incident, he gets into it with caution.
  5. The parents forced the little one to swim.

All these are psychological factors. And the parents are to blame for them. They are the ones who must control the process and do everything possible to protect the baby.

In addition to the above reasons, there are others:

  1. Uncomfortable bath. The baby is uncomfortable in it and he tries in every possible way to show it to you.
  2. The baby has diaper rash, which hurts during water procedures.
  3. Unhealthy atmosphere in the family. Frequent quarrels, scandals, screams, from which your baby primarily suffers. After all, children absorb everything like a sponge and immediately pick up on the mood of their relatives.

How to fix the situation

If a child is afraid of water, you need to act comprehensively:

  1. First, learn to negotiate with your baby. Don't shout, don't scold him. Calmly explain that you need to swim. Play games, show rubber toys. Maybe he will want to play with them and forget about the tears.
  2. As for the water temperature, it should be thirty-seven degrees.
  3. No need to add hot water. The temperature should be the same.
  4. If the baby does not like the bath or is uncomfortable in it, replace it with another one. To prevent your little one from slipping, place a special mat on the bottom.
  5. Buy baby shampoo that doesn't sting the eyes.
  6. Under no circumstances leave your baby alone. He may fall, be afraid that you are not there, and become confused. And then the fear will not disappear, but, on the contrary, will worsen.
  7. If your baby does not like the process of washing her hair, there is no need to carry out this procedure every day. Twice a week is enough.
  8. You don’t need to bathe the baby for a very long time - you shouldn’t put a strain on the little body.
  9. There is no need to yell at your child while bathing. Talk calmly, you can sing a song or play some tune on the radio or phone. And the baby will feel good, and you will feel good.
  10. We must not forget that girls and boys require different approaches; the rules of hygiene for boys are different from caring for a girl.

Recommendations for proper bathing

At an early age, children quickly forget unpleasant moments. You can cancel swimming for a few days. This way the child will forget about the situation that happened and will happily splash in the water.

A change of environment brings positive results. Quite often, a child associates a certain room with certain emotions. Give your baby a bath in another room. If earlier you bathed him in the bathroom, but today move the bath to the living room. Lay down an oilcloth to prevent water from getting on the floor. Turn on the TV or a song on your phone. Sing along and have fun swimming.

Look at the baby's mood. If he just cried and is nervous, you don't need to touch him. Most likely, he will begin to show character again. Wait until he finally calms down. Place him in your arms and hug him gently. Talk to your toddler. And then in a calm atmosphere everything will go like clockwork.

If you bathe your baby in a shared bathroom, you can keep him company. But before this, it is advisable for an adult to take a shower and put on underwear. This way the coward will feel more confident and secure. However, it is better to take care of your own bath; a baby bath should be on the mandatory list of what you need to buy before birth.

It’s rare, but there are cases when a child at an advanced age, about 5-6 years old, is still afraid of water. Then parents should playfully gradually increase the water level in the bathtub each time. Today it's up to his knees, and tomorrow play and invite him to fill the bathtub a little more.

Regardless of age and reason, in order to achieve positive results, you need to be patient, use your imagination and try to understand the baby.

Often the reason for refusing to bathe or wash your hair is a traumatic experience. For example, a child was put into too hot or cold water, soap got into his eyes, the child slipped and fell, etc. Thus, in these cases there is an objective reason for fear. It happens that the fear of water is age-related. What does it mean?

This means that some kind of fear is inherent in a significant number of children of a certain age and often goes away with age. Fear of water is common in young children. Regardless of the reasons, you shouldn't expect your child to outgrow the problem and bathe comfortably in the near future. Just like you can’t expect a child to change his behavior quickly. How can a parent help a child?

Firstly, there is no need to force a child to wash. Of course, it is extremely difficult to completely give up washing, but it is possible to reduce the number of procedures that at some point became unpleasant for the child. If before the fear arose, the child bathed every day, then you should not continue to insist on the daily ritual; it is better to wash a little less often.

Secondly, try to make the child not the object of washing, but its subject. Let the child wash the doll, plastic toys, and dishes. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to do this in the bathroom, especially if the child does not like to be in the bathroom at all. If a child is afraid to wash, then you can first wash the doll in a basin or toy bathtub, while the child himself will not be in the water. Mom or dad can speak on behalf of the doll that she really likes to swim, the water is pleasant, etc. If the child is afraid to wash his hair, let him wash the doll’s hair first. You definitely need to pay attention to the fact that the doll has become very clean and she likes to have clean hair.

Thirdly, developing a positive attitude towards water procedures can begin with a trip to the store. The child can choose a new washcloth, a beautiful towel, or a robe. If the problem is that the child is afraid to wash his hair because shampoo has gotten into his eyes, be sure to buy a high-quality shampoo that does not sting his eyes. By the way, dear parents, do not forget to test shampoos on yourself. This will help you avoid problems in the future.

Fourth, be sure to look around. Do you have a cat at home? She washes herself with her tongue every day. Tell your child about how animals wash themselves. At the zoo you can watch bears bathing, elephants pouring water on themselves with their trunks, etc. Such observations will be useful to the child and will help him begin to overcome his fear. Please note that not only animals wash themselves. A sprinkler washes the streets every day. And the car itself is washed in a special car wash. What about the rain? This is a huge shower! He washes everything: houses, streets, grass and trees.

Fifth, read topical books. Of course, the first one that comes to mind is “Moidodyr”. But there are so many other wonderful poems and stories!

Komarovsky told what to do when a child does not want to wash

Dr. Komarovsky told parents what to do when a child does not want to take a bath

The main rule of children's bathing remains the same: no violence, fun for everyone. The situation when a child cries during bathing occurs quite often and is definitely not a pleasure.

Popular pediatrician Evgeny Komarovsky writes about this. He published an excerpt from his book “365 Tips for the First Year of Your Baby’s Life” on his Instagram page. ⠀ Komarovsky gave advice that will allow parents to make certain changes in the bathing procedure.

“It is highly likely that at least something will help, after which daily children’s bathing will become enjoyable for all family members,” the doctor notes. ⠀ According to Komarovsky, it is better to start bathing a child with water at a temperature that does not cause negative emotions in the child.

“Cries at 32°C, but smiles at 35°C - no problem, start at 35! But after a safe and calm dive, increase the rate of cooling of the water - make sure that cold water constantly flows into the bath in a thin stream,” explains the doctor. ⠀ Changing certain organizational bathing parameters can also help. Therefore, Komarovsky gave advice on what can be changed: ⠀ • time of day - swim not late in the evening, but early in the evening, or in the morning, or during the day; ⠀ • time in relation to food - bathe not an hour before meals, but an hour after meals; ⠀ • water temperature - as a rule, we are talking about making the water warmer; ⠀ • bathroom lighting intensity - as a rule, it should be reduced; ⠀ • the identity of the one who bathes the child - a surprisingly common situation occurs when a child cries with his mother, but not with his father or older brother.

⠀ “Another quite possible option for preventing crying in the bathroom is joint bathing: the pre-washed mother is immersed in the bath, after which the child is added there...” added Evgeny Komarovsky.

Let us remember that Komarovsky warned about a bad childhood habit: “Science does not know how to prevent it.”

As Politeka reported, Komarovsky told how to strengthen children's hair.

Politeka also wrote that Komarovsky crossed out all medical norms: “they did it wrong all the time.”
