What to do if your child farts often? Is it good or bad?

If a child farts frequently (that is, flatulence occurs), then, as a rule, in the absence of changes in the general condition, this is a manifestation of a disease such as simple dyspepsia or indigestion. In addition, if an infant receives only mother's milk, then flatulence is usually due to the nutrition of the nursing mother.

If intense passing of gases is accompanied by an increase in body temperature, the appearance of a rash, frequent vomiting or diarrhea, and the child becomes lethargic and capricious, then in this case it is necessary to urgently consult a doctor, since the baby may have an infectious disease or toxic poisoning. In case of flatulence in a child with a simultaneous deterioration in the general condition, a doctor’s consultation is necessary.

A child farts: what to do?

Although frequent gas production is normal, there are times when children need help from their parents. This is necessary when the process is accompanied by tears, loose stools, pain, etc. A nursing mother should reconsider her diet. If the baby is bottle-fed, it is advisable to change the formula. But if increased gas formation appears after changing the mixture, return to the one that was before. You can also find out what to feed your baby if there is no breast milk here.

Carefully monitor your baby's reaction if you give him a new product to try. If your baby farts frequently, turn him onto his stomach after feeding. This is an excellent prevention of flatulence. Massage and special gymnastics, which any mother can perform, will also be excellent helpers. Dill water and children's herbal tea help with increased gas formation.

Flatulence in a 6 month old baby

Yulia, Smolensk

July 30, 2018

Good day. Sorry, long story. The child started having stomach problems a couple of days after arriving from the hospital. The child was on breastfeeding. I suddenly lost sleep, began to sleep little and poorly during the day, at night more or less only the first 3 hours, then groaned through my sleep, tucked my legs in, screamed, cried. Sometimes he screamed so much that we simply didn’t know what to do. The problem did not occur a few hours a day, but actually around the clock. At 2.5 months, colic gradually turned into gas. The child became calmer during the day. But he farted a lot. Until now (the child is 6 months old) the situation has not changed. During the day, the child farts a lot, but apparently does not experience much discomfort, because the gases are released evenly when moving. But at night it’s a nightmare. The dream is terrible. He wakes up EVERY HOUR and farts or tries and fails. Difficult to fit again. Periodically cries, screams, gets up at 5 am. A lot of gas collects, and he no longer falls asleep. He wakes up, moves actively, and everything “comes out.” We took the coprogram several times. Nothing special. Only neutral fat in moderation. I am attaching 2 coprograms made at different times. Flora has been surrendered many times. At first there was a pathogenic flora (Klebsiella, hemolysing bacillus), we treated it, but in the latest tests it is not there! I'm attaching the latest ones. Ultrasound of the OBP: the liver is slightly enlarged (right lobe 79.1, thickness 54.4; Left lobe: 60.5, thickness 37.2), inflection of the gallbladder in the bottom area. Everything else is normal). I am attaching a photo of the conclusion. Feces were tested for carbohydrates. The first result was 0.04% in 1 month, the second was done in 3.5 months. Result: 0.25-0.4%. 3 neurologists looked at the child. They say everything is normal. Neurosonography is normal. The child's stool was irregular. At first it was liquid. With the introduction of the first complementary foods (zucchini), the food began to improve, with a denser consistency. About once a day. But even if he poops well, for example, before bed, after a couple of hours he still farts actively. So I don’t see any dependence on stool. The child’s nutrition: the first 2 weeks were purely on breastfeeding, then I was hospitalized and he had to be switched to formula. Mixed nutrition for up to 2 months. Then pure mixture. Nutrilon Comfort mixture. After more than 5 months, zucchini was gradually introduced, cauliflower increased the gases - they canceled it, pumpkin was slowly introduced. We introduce dairy-free buckwheat. On the advice of a gastroenterologist, I administered fermented milk mixture (Nutrilon) once a day - the gases increased, sleep became worse, and a dry rash appeared on the legs. Canceled. At 3 months, I tried for the first time to change the main formula to Humana Expert (I didn’t go because the child was choking on liquid formula, only thick formula was suitable for him), then Humana Anticolic (the child vomited, they canceled it). At 4.5 months we tried Friso Vom (a rash appeared on the legs again, which had just been removed). All mixtures were tried to be introduced gradually. The child is gaining weight normally and has an appetite. There is no allergy to cow's milk protein and casein, according to tests for IgE antibodies. Treatment: they tried to treat dysbacteriosis for a long time. First we drank Rela Life and Zosterin Ultra. Then Linux. Then they drove out the pathogenic flora with Piobacteriophage, enterofuil. Then live bacteria (bifidumbacterin, lactobacterin). By the way, living bacteria, as well as fermented milk mixture, intensifies gas in a child, and he screams half the night. In general, I have sworn off giving them again (except in extreme cases). We took all the drugs with simethicone, no effect was visible! We also tried dill water, baby calm, babynos. The only thing that helped, it seemed to me, was Bebinos! This is a tincture of chamomile, fennel and coriander. The child slept much better with this drug. But a rash developed and they canceled it. Maybe the rash was due to the sorbitol in the composition, or maybe due to the herbal component. Two doctors prescribed Creon. And the third said that there is no need to drink enzymes, because the coprogram is normal. And you don’t need to drink choleretic drugs, because the stool is colored. Like this. In general, in general, we are doing well. But at night we don’t sleep, we fart. Please help me with advice, otherwise we will soon go crazy. What can be done? How to improve your baby's digestion? What foods should we introduce complementary foods with (what do you recommend)?

Intestinal colic

The cause of painful gas formation is often intestinal colic. This is also a normal phenomenon for a baby up to 3-4 months, but it causes him severe discomfort. To prevent them, use the following recommendations:

  1. Often a newborn baby farts in the evening. He begins to scream, grunt and moan. All this can bother a child during the daytime, but during the day he is busy learning about the world around him, so he doesn’t pay much attention to them. But in the evening, when his nervous system is exhausted, he begins to be capricious. In the evening, provide your baby with a calm home environment to prevent and also quickly cope with the “evening concert”.
  2. Place the baby on his tummy and play with him in this position. You can use a children's gymnastics ball for the game. Lift the baby's legs and pull them towards you, press them again to the tummy. Thanks to these simple manipulations, feces will be easier to pass and the accumulation of gases will not cause severe discomfort to the baby.
  3. You can use various colic remedies.

Girls, when will a child learn to fart? It's simply impossible...

- Damn, how I understand you (We had this for the first month, we thought my husband and I would go crazy, but now it’s 3 months... It’s ok. But now we have a different problem, we don’t poop ourselves, and now we have to help her every evening, because that can throw a tantrum at night. We are also waiting for everything to get better until 6 months. And you have patience and strength.
